Since no leccy will kill my gas heating, I bought an ethanol burner to huddle around:

See my eco-homes thread for the full PV and battery backup stuff.

So the thing to buy is a gun and a map to Tass's gaff.

tasselhoff - 23 Sep 2021 08:49:00 (#4 of 69)

A gun? Mwahahaha!

tasselhoff - 23 Sep 2021 08:49:51 (#5 of 69)

You may need an EU passport too after they ban the crazed British hordes from entering.

Ginmonkey - 23 Sep 2021 08:50:03 (#6 of 69)

Seriously, do not use portable outdoor cookers or heaters inside your home.

In a previous job I was involved in a couple of cases where people had done that to try ans save money on electricity. It did not end well.

tasselhoff - 23 Sep 2021 08:50:39 (#7 of 69)

CO?

machiavelli - 23 Sep 2021 08:51:40 (#8 of 69)

Guns. As long as you have one, you'll have everything else.

tasselhoff - 23 Sep 2021 08:53:17 (#9 of 69)

If >1 person has a gun, that doesn't really work.

Ginmonkey - 23 Sep 2021 08:53:39 (#10 of 69)

Co2 poisoning, fire risk etc.. all in all a very bad idea.

Towelling wrist bands are handy extra to keep warm. I have a hand dynamo Touch that has a rechargeable battery in the shape of a Penguin

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Penguin-Shaped-Dynamo-Flashlight-Torch/dp/B001761LMC

Very useful as well.

Kucinghitam - 23 Sep 2021 08:01:36 (#12 of 69)

Woodburning stove.

For the 70s power cuts my parents bought a sort of hurricane lamp thing which I think ran on meths.

And we played board games in the half light.

Agaliarept - 23 Sep 2021 09:08:09 (#14 of 69)

We're just going to burn a child to keep warm.

I've got like, 40 of them.

tasselhoff - 23 Sep 2021 09:08:41 (#15 of 69)

#12 seconded

Antimatter - 23 Sep 2021 09:15:52 (#16 of 69)

#14 Seconded

A wind up radio is useful, also, I have about 1/2 dozen LED torches & lamps which are magnetic, so they stick to the fridge door and are always immediately available.

A car is very handy, for news, warmth and driving to the nearest place that has heat.

My father collected old carriage lamps. They came in very useful during the 70s power cuts.

fogsake - 23 Sep 2021 09:25:11 (#18 of 69)

Transistor radio.

fogsake - 23 Sep 2021 10:48:53 (#19 of 69)

Shedloads of AAA batteries and a bunch of LED torches/lamps. Everyone needs a personal.

Candles and oil lamps are really hazardous if you aren't used to them. Even in the centre of the table we had a lot of upsets. Bugger the romance.

Playing cards. Booze/recreationals/snacks/cash.

Kucinghitam - 23 Sep 2021 09:52:10 (#20 of 69)

I've been prompted to order a top-up of logs.
