Recommend a folding bike

Ease of folding and unfolding is top priority, because I am a ham-fisted idiot. It would also be nice if the riding experience was not too different from a normal bike. I have no experience with these newfangled things, but rode something with similar dimensions in the '70s, and it was horrible.

Brompton. Without question. Yes, they're expensive, but they're a delight to ride and extremely easy to fold and unfold. My comparison is with a Dahon, which was aluminium and so lighter than the steel Brompton, but even so the Brompton was much easier to carry because it folded up better into a more manageable package, and so felt lighter. And the Dahon had more gears, but the Brompton was still nicer to ride. It doesn't feel exactly like a normal bike, because the wheels are so small, so it takes a bit of time to get used to the different weight distribution, but apart from that it's better.

I recommend a folding bike.

Me? Atticus? Cozzer?

Also, how does one get to test ride one? It's been decades since I've had to do that sort of thing. It was in Germany, and I left my passport with the shop to ensure I wouldn't ride off into the sunset with it.

Would you be interested in a folding ebike? A friend in Germany is absolutely delighted with hers. She does a 28km round trip to work every day on it despite a back problem.

That's exactly what folding bikes make me think of, too

What's your budget?

What's your budget?

I might as well splurge, as long as I'm getting value for money. Not really interested in ebikes on philosophical and practical grounds.

I might as well splurge

In which case, definitely get a Brompton. But try one out first. It's been a few years since I last bought a bike, but usually there's no problem in giving it a test ride. You just need some ID and a credit card, I think.

LomaxFairchild - 05 Nov 2021 14:39:55 (#14 of 24)

I might as well splurge

As cozzer says, get a Brompton - unless you really want to spend £££ and do long(ish) distances, in which case get this: https://www.r-m.de/en-gb/bikes/birdy/

Arjuna - 05 Nov 2021 14:41:20 (#15 of 24)

Brompton is the best but will cost the best part of a grand. I have met loads of riders and they all seem to love them. It is a cult item as it manages the trick of being able to fold up small and still be a quality bike.

LomaxFairchild - 05 Nov 2021 14:44:40 (#16 of 24)

Brompton is the best

The Birdy is arguably better (but more than twice the price).

I don't know where you live, DU, but Brompton have an app and you can borrow their bikes for a £5 a day and an initial small fee. Depends on your location and whether they cover your area.

hailesaladdie - 08 Nov 2021 23:03:43 (#19 of 24)

If you want to give a Brompton a decent try, you could always find a Brompton Dock:

A little more niche, but I have one of these, still going strong after nearly 15 years:
