I suspect there might be a little too much ego here to see the most likely kind of culprit; the twelve year old on alcopops with an air rifle and a dare.

He's smuggled the rifle into the church during choir practice under his surplice, or whatever choirboys wear, and he had only one opportunity to shoot as he couldn't reload but the alcopop brew (for juvenile Dutch courage) affected his aim and he missed. At least he did if he was going for a head shot which you'd need to with an air rifle, to kill.
