What are we to make of Tom Ross?

His output is massively 'cheesy and chocolate boxy' (excuse the oxymoron!) but his skills and technique are amazing. I wonder if he ever attempted any serious work or was he permanently in thrall to the tv dollars?

I like his happy trees.

Wow! Yes! My apologies!

He'd have made a bloody good barrister.

My S.i.L. (himself quite handy with palette and canvas) is a huge admirer, but I have my reservations. But wtf do I know?

AdonisBlue - 25 Jun 2021 13:21:16 (#7 of 29)

The first time I saw Bob Ross on BBC four I thought wow, this guys amazing. But 14 months on and you realise he's really not. He paints a very formulaic picture over and over.

DonkeyOT - 25 Jun 2021 13:22:59 (#8 of 29)

Very true - undeniable, but still skilfully achieved in the time allotted.

That was my point - wondering why he never advanced his technique through art school. And without any time restrictions imposed; by way of seeking something worthy of real critical acclaim. Or did the tv bucks take priority?

S.i.L. reckons he was disillusioned ex-military (senior NCO).

Nobody likes sad trees - do they?

Apparently he was involved in The Joy of Painting but from his general 1970s stylings I wonder if that was the only work of similar title he worked on?

#7 - ditto most rock stars. But they're still all a million times better at their thing than any of us.

DonkeyOT - 25 Jun 2021 15:59:06 (#13 of 29)

He appears not to be much cop at painting human figures, but what the hell - that never impeded L S Lowry did it?

FWIW I'm not a fan of Mr Lowry's oeuvre either.

I don't suppose he spoke all that highly of me either.

#12 That's because it's what they do all day. I'm sure you are a million times better at what you do for a living than Dave Gilmour.

Bob was (and remains) great TV, though. Like having a cup of tea with a favourite uncle.
