Why did this thread die?

We used to post, to get cross, even to growl at each other; then we'd generally make up in our online postings but not always because we're clever, abrasive. anagrammatic types of folks and we don't mind conflict. What made us special is that we'd also meet up in person and goodness gracious didn't we all all find that fun. Couldn't believe it myself but the get-togethers I attended in York, Ilkley, Cambridge, Nottingham were some of the things that gave me hope for intelligent life on earth.emails in response are welcome to moorep{at} - {at} is of course the @ sign

Interesting question. For the sake of discussion with nobody, let me offer two differing explanations:

1. After the demise of GU Talk, a group of in-gangers from the erstwhile Xwd folder set up a similar discussion here at NtT. They hoped nobody else would notice so they could continue to play their inane behind-the-bicycle-sheds games amongst themselves. But some out-gangers did notice and started posting too, whereupon the in-gangers quickly grabbed their toys and left. As the out-gangers were only occasional posters anyway, the threads lost momentum and have been staggering around on the verge of extinction ever since.

2. Folk just lost interest once another outlet for discussion became available (I think I'm right in saying 15x15 didn't exist back then as a forum for debate on "Today's Crossword"). True, there are no clue comps there but evidently such comps in themselves are insufficient motivation for someone to log in to a website in the first place.

The crossword folder was moribund before GUT fell off the cliff. Something to do with imaginary Albanians was the problem, wasn't it?

flowbagging - 27 Mar 2016 09:39:36 (#3 of 22)

It's passed on! This folder is no more! It has ceased to be! It's expired and gone to meet its maker! It's a stiff! Bereft of life, it rests in peace! If Johnny hadn't nailed it to the perch it'd be pushing up the daisies! Its metabolic processes are now 'istory! It's off the twig! It's kicked the bucket, it's shuffled off its mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisible!! THIS IS AN EX-FOLDER!!

re #2: Albanians - and imaginary ones at that - caused the crossword folder to collapse?! Hmmm.

I was never all that interested in the details. But I did like the opportunity to mull over clues with like-minded people, including some of the setters themselves.

1. Not a dog. Perhaps.

TinyMcOtter - 28 Mar 2016 18:32:30 (#7 of 22)

Too hard?

Shall I set an easier one?

hayesendcurry - 28 Mar 2016 18:49:40 (#8 of 22)

I can't decide between COT or CUT, neither of which are a dog. Perhaps your next effort could be rather less ambiguous?

I tried an idea in a thread in another folder, an idea that I thought noel, (Don't know if it has been tried before, easy clues but a slight mistake in the clue)

Wasn't DavidT one of its stalwarts? I haven't seen him around for ages.

flowbagging - 05 Apr 2016 13:13:46 (#11 of 22)

Moved to twitter apparently

Vendor - 05 Apr 2016 13:18:24 (#12 of 22)

Yup, lost to Twitter. I'm still in contact if you want anything passing on.

hayesendcurry - 06 Apr 2016 00:15:03 (#13 of 22)

DavidT was indeed a stalwart but, inadvisedly, he invited a "friend" to join GUT Crosswords and that "friend" subsequently reduced the folder to rubble.

Tenesmus - 06 Apr 2016 08:02:36 (#14 of 22)

Was it DavidT who appeared on BBC Newswatch?

Vendor - 06 Apr 2016 09:51:59 (#15 of 22)

Yes. In a piece about Andrew Neil's Floating Cunt Palace in 2010.

(although to protect the delicate viewers of the Beeb, he referred to it as Andrew Neil's Floating Gin Palace)

Gotout - 06 Apr 2016 19:36:35 (#16 of 22)

I only met David once at a meet in Hebden Bridge. Also there was Myrtletree and I think Poxyserver. I can't remember who else was there.

It was amusing finding out how we got our usernames, and also confessing to some of our our pseudonyms!

Leftie - 19 Sep 2019 11:36:02 (#17 of 22)

If I could go back, I wouldn't go to that Leeds meet or her house.

Delighted_User - 19 Sep 2019 12:41:12 (#18 of 22)

How many letters?

RosyLovelady - 21 Sep 2019 18:15:56 (#19 of 22)

The destructive "friend" (Euphrates and other aliases) was one one attempt1of3 's. I first met them both at Araucaria's 80th birthday party.
