Catalunya - it's kicking off a bit...

The Catalan president has accused the Spanish government of effectively suspending the region’s autonomy and declaring a de facto state of emergency. Police officers raided Catalan government offices on Wednesday and arrested 12 senior officials in a bid to stop an independence referendum being held in less than two weeks’ time.

Just saw a bit on Newsnight. Police officers mindlessly battering people who didn't appear to be doing anything other than sitting peacefully on the floor.

So Jacob is your position independence for the Catalans and not for the Brits from the EU?

Tomnoddy - 20 Sep 2017 23:23:42 (#3 of 1373)

DNFTT.

BBBilly - 20 Sep 2017 23:23:58 (#4 of 1373)

Brexit in 2 posts; is this a record?

Jacob_Richter - 20 Sep 2017 23:36:16 (#5 of 1373)

A member state of the EU is arresting people attempting to organise a vote and confiscating millions of ballot papers to prevent a vote taking place.

The news reports of tens of thousands on the streets of Barcelona look to be an underestimate.

That's the ever-cuddly Guardia Civil.

It does put the state of things in our own country somewhat in perspective. As do those AfD election adverts in Germany featuring pigs.

Eligelis - 21 Sep 2017 08:38:16 (#9 of 1373)

Isn't there an opera about the Gardia of civil?

hailesaladdie - 21 Sep 2017 08:46:43 (#10 of 1373)

Civil, my arse.

Europe needs yet another independent state. Because 51 is not enough...

# It might be a paid editorial. ;-)

I've just been watching a video stream on this:

https://twitter.com/i/events/906300977778614274

One of the police, in riot gear and helmet, headbutts a woman protester. WTF.

Jacob_Richter - 01 Oct 2017 10:55:03 (#16 of 1373)

Stopping people voting isn't a good look for a supposed democracy.

Dementor - 01 Oct 2017 11:08:24 (#17 of 1373)

It is a bit odd.

Also, the voting is unlawful rather than illegal - I think - it not being a crime to participate in an unauthorised referendum.

Their credit rating has junk bond status so I don't fancy their chances outside Spain too much.https://www.thespainreport.com/articles/684-160318181656-s-p-downgrades-catalonia-to-even-worse-junk-bond-status-on-very-weak-financial-management

grenadiglia - 01 Oct 2017 11:48:58 (#19 of 1373)

Serious and almost unbelievably stupid overreaction by the Spanish state there. I've been watching the live news broadcast on TV3 de Catalunya. A journalist from El País was saying this may have consequences for Rajoy's government, which is currently being propped up by the PNV (Basque Nationalist Party).

TRaney - 01 Oct 2017 11:49:52 (#20 of 1373)

Total fuck up by the looks of it. What were they thinking?
