Anger as Éire’s highest building to be built in CORK

The green light has been given for the €140m redevelopment of the old Port of Cork site on Custom House Quay, which will include a 140-metre hotel, retail and a maritime culture and heritage attraction. Once completed, it will be the tallest building in the Irish Free State. Developers said the scheme is set to become an iconic landmark in the heart of the city and will increase potential for growth in a post-Covid-19 era.

Residents were less impressed, however. “This is Cork, not Shanghai,” said Mary Isabel Bernadette O’Malley, a 47 year old housewife and grandmother of eight. “They built all these tall buildings in Dublin in the Celtic Tiger and look what happened there, to be sure.”

What a disappointment. I thought for a moment this building was to be made of or from cork.

“This is Cork, not Shanghai,”

But there'll be a sky-bar, and a restaurant -- and maybe Chinese waiters.

the artists impression looks like someone has photoshopped in some random big building

I hope they have a good plan for the foundations. Corcaigh means marsh, and in that location it means tidal marsh.

Also Éire and Irish Free State. You really know how to offend, man.
