Holland! Land of contrasts!

ReverendBlueJeans - 26 Jan 2021 09:32:29 (#2 of 32)

Great name for a band, that.

(Dutch Riot, I mean)

I like the Dutch. They value freedom more than most countries. They are generally quiet, mild mannered and polite.. if a little direct. But the 9pm curfew was clearly a step too far for them, especially given world war 2's occupation.

Hopefully other world leaders will be watching and have second thoughts about imposing curfews which there's no scientific evidence will help reduce covid when we are already locked down.

I think Holland's a barometer for changing world tolerance of the lockdown. What's worried me is the MSM's coverage of this tonight was very one sided, all aimed at discrediting the rioters as looters and not a single journalist even daring to suggest a 9pm curfew may have be a step too far.

barricades built out of bicycles

There's an amusing clip of a Dutch lady yelling that it's her bike they're making a barricade with and the rioter sheepishly places the bike back. I can't find the clip so you'll have to take my word for it.

They have expressed their displeasure by looting shops.

The enthusiasm for curfews in this is baffling. Our 10pm curfew in early autumn worked out so well didn't it?

machiavelli - 27 Jan 2021 07:56:30 (#8 of 32)

The Belgians shut the small shops, not because they were a proven vector but because the government wanted to put the shits up people about the virus.

We haven't had one since 1103 A.D. so hard to remember.

Looks like yobbery to me.

And surely we've long since got past the stage of seeing people acting like this on streets, via our TV screens, wherever in the world they're filmed, and assuming they're in the right just because cops stand up to them. Scenes like this have been organised and filmed in all sorts of countries, since mid-twentieth century, and have ranged from the progressive to the reactionary.

AdonisBlue - 27 Jan 2021 14:49:08 (#13 of 32)

#10 No I'm not condoning what was clearly a bunch of yobs smashing shit.

But I do think steps such as a 9pm curfew, which has little basis in science as a control measure, will give dicks like this the excuse they need.

I'm constantly amazed to be honest how most people in most countries have complied with the lockdown for 10 months and surprised we've not seen more Dutch style riots.

Band of Contrasts

That could be a name for a band as well.

AdonisBlue - 27 Jan 2021 14:58:28 (#16 of 32)

Were the Poll Tax rioters a bunch of yobs? I remember seeing that guy throw a metal pole through a cop car window and thinking..that's a bit much mate. But it got the Poll Tax withdrawn.

Putin's Bitches/Hounds

not suggesting Big P is behind the Dutch Riot, just adding to possibly good band names

FeudalClink - 27 Jan 2021 14:59:57 (#18 of 32)

Funny how electrical and sports shops always represent the man the most.

TauCeti - 27 Jan 2021 15:00:12 (#19 of 32)

Why is Mr P always blamed anyway? they don't need to do anything actually, UK and rest do it itself.....

cozzer - 27 Jan 2021 15:00:26 (#20 of 32)

which has little basis in science as a control measure

What makes you think that stopping people going out for 8 hours a day will not reduce transmission?
