I daresay Gonfarawank could provide statistics to support this claim.

tasselhoff - 01 Dec 2021 13:15:38 (#2 of 35)

You could catch your death going out without a good jumper.

Arjuna - 01 Dec 2021 13:16:28 (#3 of 35)

Too many orcs there

Gotout - 01 Dec 2021 13:18:47 (#4 of 35)

I was up at Dunnet Head in September and I was looking at the Orkneys from the mainland.

this is my Orkneys story.

Dayraven - 01 Dec 2021 13:23:32 (#5 of 35)

Remember, if you gaze into the Orkneys, the Orkneys gazes also into you.

tasselhoff - 01 Dec 2021 13:28:18 (#6 of 35)

Until you end up with orc knees

solomongursky - 01 Dec 2021 13:50:16 (#7 of 35)

Then you wave at The Orkneys and realise The Orkneys were in fact gazing at the person next to you.

It's true https://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/news/scotland

Lagopus - 01 Dec 2021 14:00:26 (#9 of 35)

It's not a country.

DesEsseintes - 01 Dec 2021 14:00:42 (#10 of 35)

Yeah it's the bohemian quarter of Scotland.

browserbutton - 01 Dec 2021 14:03:02 (#11 of 35)

It is a dangerous place to eat fish and chips, because of the great skuas.

Dayraven - 01 Dec 2021 14:05:34 (#12 of 35)

Those are handy for kebabs, though.

wickeltisch - 01 Dec 2021 14:12:59 (#13 of 35)

Long time ago (the 1970s, fact fans) I visited Orkney. My only memory is that I came across an American in Kirkwall who couldn't stop laughing that there was a street called Watergate.

That's my Orkney story.

Bad things happen to people who call Orkney 'The Orkneys'.

Trouble with Orkney (and Shetland) is that the place is full of often hippyish Down From Londons.

solomongursky - 01 Dec 2021 14:14:47 (#15 of 35)

Hackney in The Orkneys.

ReverendBlueJeans - 01 Dec 2021 14:16:51 (#16 of 35)

Hackney in Hackness*.

* Actually a place in Orkney.

wickeltisch - 01 Dec 2021 14:19:17 (#17 of 35)

A non-native speaker says: in Orkney makes it sound as if it's a country. On Orkney makes it sound as if it's an island. Is that wrong?

ReverendBlueJeans - 01 Dec 2021 14:21:45 (#18 of 35)

Orkney is a place made up of lots of islands, all of which have individual names.

tasselhoff - 01 Dec 2021 14:21:54 (#19 of 35)

On Orkney makes it sound like a planet. Or moon. Or an asteroid hurtling to earth that will kill us all, most quite agonisingly slowly.

Dayraven - 01 Dec 2021 14:22:33 (#20 of 35)

all of which have individual names.

Except the Mainland, which can't be bothered with one.
