'Angel Heart' and 'The Ninth Gate', that's my Halloween sorted.

Lemongrab - 18 Oct 2015 18:44:27 (#2 of 160)

There is already a horror thread, though.

kvelertak - 18 Oct 2015 18:47:10 (#3 of 160)

Two horror threads!!! - Terrifying!

Uncanny...It's like looking into a parallel universe where they don't have sweet chilli-flavoured Pringles...

Lemongrab - 18 Oct 2015 18:51:37 (#6 of 160)

Some good recommendations on there!

Bleu11 - 18 Oct 2015 19:17:21 (#7 of 160)

My apologies. I did check the first 4-5 pages of the Film folder before starting this.

Perve.

Lemongrab - 04 Nov 2015 10:46:57 (#9 of 160)

I haven't seen either of those - any good?

Explicity2 - 04 Nov 2015 10:55:26 (#10 of 160)

Both excellent.

toffle - 04 Nov 2015 14:32:05 (#11 of 160)

Angel Heart is a fine slice of well-cured 1980's ham.

Yammoto - 13 Nov 2015 16:41:51 (#12 of 160)

The Innocents...

Heckler - 13 Nov 2015 16:48:26 (#13 of 160)

The ninth gate is a rare example of the film being hugely superior to the book* and oddly I was also left extremely cold by the book** Angel Heart was based on.

  • The Dumas Club
** Falling Angel

Maniac

On c4 at 1.10am tonight. I highly recommend it, Elijah Wood plays maniac very well.

I Sell The Dead

A very cheaply made comedy horror, with Dominic Monaghan and Larry Fessenden (Never heard of him but he's the spitting image of Nicholson in The Shining) as a pair of middling bodysnatchers from the mid 1700s who discover there's a lucrative market in digging up the undead. Ron Perlman puts on an Oirish accent.

Imagine Sweeney Todd gallows humour, with a slice of Shaun of the Deadpan.

Favourite bit: the enterprising corpse snatchers discover that a corpse from an unconsecrated grave, with a garlic necklace, and a stake through the heart, is buried that way for a reason. Some theory testing follows.

Explicity2 - 23 Nov 2015 09:10:22 (#16 of 160)

Deleted and put in the What's the Last Film... thread instead.

Pinkgum - 17 Oct 2017 21:54:40 (#17 of 160)

I just watched the first four episodes of AHS Cult. It's a return to form for those who, like me, were disappointed with Roanoke (the last one).

Pinkgum - 19 Oct 2017 21:30:17 (#18 of 160)

Saw the Ritual tonight. Excellent acting, especially from Spall.

It put me in mind of The Descent, similar premise (group tensions), but no where near as tense or scary.

meepmeep - 13 Nov 2018 21:06:00 (#19 of 160)

Overlord is pretty good, very slick and gory. A few really well done shots.

The Endless

(Netflix)

Low budget Lovecraftian film with some good ideas at heart, but an absolutely abominable script and plot holes you could ride an Elder One through.
