Kitchen gadgets - either new ones you've just acquired or old ones you still love/bought but now never use.

Presumably we all have them. Blenders, liquidisers, vegetable slicey things we saw advertised on tv, coffee makers, bread makers, ice-cream makers - aren't our kitchens full of these things - some in regular use, some relegated to cupboards or even the attic?

What are your most treasured items, old and new?

Most of these things cause more work in getting out, assembling, washing up and putting away than they save in preparation.

My Spong mincer, however, just does the job it's supposed to.

OK, this will be a slow burner! Recent gadgets (for me) bought, a potato ricer, which I love - it makes the best mashed potato ever. Also recently bought, a mandolin. I can see myself wearying of this, although it does make the dull process of carrot slicing less arduous and slightly more exciting as there's always the danger of slicing off several layers of finger.

En route to the cupboard, the coffee maker. It's so bloody complicated - and it's only a cheapy expresso/cappucino maker. And the deep fat fryer, off to the attic with you!

Oh and I love my little garlic thingy in which you put the clove into a little plastic ball which has little wheels and chops up the garlic wonderfully as you wheel it along a work surface or even your hand, plus - and a real plus, is easy to clean.

I got it at Steamer Trading (several shops) re the garlic thing. John Lewis sell it too, but exorbitantly priced at about £15. You can buy the same model for about £10 in local cook shops. It's clear plastic with a bit of green, and looks like a little clear plastic dome with black and green wheels! It's fab, samesame.

It's about an inch and a half/two inches in diameter, carmencita.

A potato ricer is also fantastic. Best mash ever. Boil your potatoes and put them in what looks like a giant garlic press, squish down and the potato comes out without any lumps and is just fantastic. Good for rostis, also.

But there's even a better garlic way...Now one can buy fresh garlic chunks, minced if desired, in small jars of olive oil. It's really, real garlic, not some crap "powder" or some such shit. Chopped up, smells great, ready-to-use and none of the endless hassle of chopping the stuff that folks just hate...

I get given kitchen gadgets, and used to buy them, but like most folks find, they just take up space and are useless. As one poster said, by the time you've washed them up and put them away, it's far too much hassle...

But I couldn't do without my microwave for re-heating cups of tea. What would one do without it? Cold tea?

Indeed, my microwave is used to heat cold tea more than anything else! An excellent device for that, at least.

Having said that, I bought a big organic free range chicken, took it out of the fridge to get used to room temperature, then pre-heated the oven, peeled and par-boiled the potatoes ready for roasting.

Then realised the oven had packed up.

I cooked the chicken in the microwave, and whilst it would NEVER be my preferred form of cooking, it did work surprisingly well. Of cause I had to slice and saute the sliced potatoes, but it wasn't entirely awful. It was actually surprisingly edible.

So, yes, a microwave is good in terms of warming and, only in emergency, cooking.

My microwave went kaput about a year ago. I still haven't replaced it and rarely think "bugger, I wish I had a microwave to do that in".

I love my hand held electric whisk for getting egg whites to peaks and I love my liquidiser for making soups.

I have a slicy thing with attachments for slicing, grating, shredding, and generally making big stuff small, which is ace.
