Thread to mark every mention of England's little talked about 1966 World Cup win

You may not realise, but it's 50 years ago this year.

TinyMcOtter - 08 Jan 2016 06:06:41 (#2 of 45)

Which sport?

Moschops - 08 Jan 2016 06:44:07 (#3 of 45)

That always felt like another country. It's 20 years since 3 Loons though, fuck.

What sort of phone reckons Loons is more likely than Lions?

The full game, recorded in monochrome, is a joy to watch. You will believe that Alan Ball was a footballing god.

The movie version, recorded in full colour, is probably the Worst Film Ever Made.

Oh, and Alan Ball senior was a footballing god as manager of Halifax Town. Bless his stereotypical sheepskin coat.

Apparently the match got 'the Full Monday Night Football Treatment' on Sky Sports last Monday. I didn't see it but I think we won 4-2.

MontyPeculiar - 08 Jan 2016 08:00:04 (#6 of 45)

Ffs. SPOILER ALERT.

HouseOfLametta - 08 Jan 2016 09:31:56 (#7 of 45)

He thought it was all over.

popstar7 - 08 Jan 2016 09:39:06 (#8 of 45)

There's England players now who weren't even born in that glorious summer when Baddiel and Skinner ruled the charts.

CaptainBlack - 08 Jan 2016 09:39:47 (#9 of 45)

There were about three of those.

Bonusy - 08 Jan 2016 09:40:47 (#10 of 45)

He thought it was all over.

It isn't yet, another 51 weeks of this to go.

A Canadian one?

Anyway, I haven't heard any mention of this being the 50th anniversary until I read this thread.

milhouse - 08 Jan 2016 09:48:06 (#12 of 45)

In that 50 years they've got past the quarter finals exactly once. Which is a bit shit.

thotch - 08 Jan 2016 09:49:18 (#13 of 45)

I am quite embarrassed by this hullabaloo, in advance of it even happening.

milhouse - 08 Jan 2016 09:51:25 (#14 of 45)

The Premier League is the BEST LEAGUE IN THE WORLD. England has every right to celebrate winning a home tournament thanks to a dubious line call half a century ago.

thisonehasalittlehat - 08 Jan 2016 10:12:28 (#15 of 45)

Is it the olympics again this year? They come around quicker and quicker don't they.

RosyLovelady - 08 Jan 2016 10:14:09 (#16 of 45)

< England's little talked about 1966 World Cup win >

Their shirts and knickers were made of nylon in them days.

thisonehasalittlehat - 08 Jan 2016 10:14:55 (#17 of 45)

Football shirts still are made of nylon though. Horrible things.

You needed a thick, cotton shirt for those Kes-style matches in the freezing cold, not some filmy material better suited to a negligee.

RosyLovelady - 08 Jan 2016 10:19:22 (#20 of 45)

A string vest under the negligee?
