The Footie Brexit thread

I've been posting stuff in PotD and News threads, but I think the volume of it means we need a dedicated thread.

The government has been consulting with various industry bodies over Brexit, in particular with respect to the Irish border, but is forcing them to sign NDAs, which is unusual and maybe unprecedented in such circumstances. These agencies say that this prevents them from informing the public and correcting misapprehensions (although the nature of them we don't know)

I can recommend Brexit Republic, a podcast from RTE, for the view from Ireland.

Posted this on the main thread, but for those that sensibly stay away from UK News

I've been to a couple of events with Irish and UK ministers, and MPs who are not in government, and all seem to suggest that the divorce deal is almost there, or certainly a lot closer than is sometimes suggested in the press, and that things are a lot more amicable than certain talking heads would have us believe.

Of course it can all be scuppered by the Tory right yet.

Of course it can all be scuppered by the Tory right yet.

With the aid of the DUP, that's my fear too.

dreams99 - 11 Oct 2018 09:16:59 (#6 of 1213)

The DUP are threatening to scupper the Budget if they don't get their way.

If they get what they want then it's not impossible that there'll be a united Ireland within a decade or two. While the whole exercise involves shooting your own foot, they seem intent on shooting themselves in the head.

A Catholic Norn friend was saying the same last night

Not really an appropriate metaphor, in the circs.

This is my impression too. Pragmatism will prevail I suspect. And if not, we'll have to have a referendum.

Plus the pound is appreciating against the Euro quite significantly, which seems to suggest the markets agree.

dreams99 - 11 Oct 2018 09:32:55 (#12 of 1213)

That's a two-sided trade, there are multiple reasons why it might be moving.

mememe - 11 Oct 2018 09:35:12 (#13 of 1213)

Yes, fair point.

dreams99 - 11 Oct 2018 09:42:43 (#14 of 1213)

Also, the movement isn't huge, it's been between 1.10 and 1.15 all year. Too much noise to derive a reason.

mememe - 11 Oct 2018 09:44:54 (#15 of 1213)

Don't harsh my mellow, man. I am trying to be optimistic here.

The interesting thing is there may be a boost post March 29th whatever the agreement is. Companies are holding back on investment decisions at the moment because they don't know what's going to happen, what adjustments they may need to make, whether they might have to relocate for example. After March there will be some clarity, good or bad, which might release this held back investment.

Of course idiots like Raab will use that to justify whatever muddled policy they've come to.

Stanley Johnson's solution to the Irish border question is to let the Irish shoot each other:

You can't beat a bit of empathy.
