Today, most of (my) twitter is:

1) Dumping on JK Rowling for being a transphobe. Fuelled by two generations of people who've grown up with her books and feel betrayed that she doesn't share their values.

2) Slippery slope stuff about removing statues. Including people quoting Orwell without understanding it (the best one was that Orwell was warning against socialism in 1984)

3) Tail end of BLM in the US, with the usual right wing pundits claiming victimhood.

FrankieTeardrop - 10 Jun 2020 11:31:51 (#2 of 282)

Yes, I've heard that Rowling has been targeted by gynophobic bigots - being called things like "an old hag".

Plus ça change...

SharkPatoo - 10 Jun 2020 11:35:27 (#3 of 282)

I'm just glad Daniel Radcliffe was man enough to apologise for her.

I also note his next fillum is called 'Guns Akimbo' which has reviewed itself if you ask me.

Tadagee - 10 Jun 2020 11:36:36 (#4 of 282)

I cannot hear the word 'Akimbo' now without thinking of League of Gentleman.

Agaliarept - 10 Jun 2020 11:37:50 (#5 of 282)

Kinda disappointed so many people are talking about red hot chili peppers but not rage against the machine or system of a down. Especially during these protests, have you ever heard prison song or killing in the name of? Fuck off with californication.

Hard to argue.

I cannot hear the word 'Akimbo' now without thinking of League of Gentleman.

The big thing on science twitter is #shutdownstem - going a day without doing any science - which is literally doing nothing.

Hardly an outlier view. Pretty much what I was taught at school. and one I imagine many would agree with today.

davedanon - 10 Jun 2020 14:23:29 (#16 of 282)

There's a pretty big difference between socialism and totalitarianism.

moto748 - 10 Jun 2020 14:24:46 (#17 of 282)

I know, dave.

davedanon - 10 Jun 2020 14:30:17 (#18 of 282)

So you were taught wrongly in school.

misosoup100 - 10 Jun 2020 14:31:02 (#19 of 282)

the best one was that Orwell was warning against socialism in 1984

wasn't that Animal Farm?

FleurDuMal - 10 Jun 2020 14:40:05 (#20 of 282)

He warned against totalitarianism both in Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four.

He never warned against socialism, as he was a life-long socialist. He wanted to show that words could be used to deceive people, so you could sell something as 'socialism' (or, democracy), yet it would actually be fascism,

One for the populists, claiming the 'Will of the People'.
