Trumpocalypse XV: Old Man Yells At Cloud

You know the drill.

PaperRustler - 11 May 2021 15:17:22 (#341 of 1856)

I'm going to read a bit more about McCarthyism, because it seems at least superficially similar; opponents are dangerous socialists and communists, dissent is unpatriotic, and bizarre witch hunts and smear campaigns are the norm. (There's even the stamp of Roy Cohn on both.) Maybe the tide will turn on this, as it did on McCarthy when people realised that he did not, in fact, have any decency.

TheSwearingBear - 11 May 2021 15:21:32 (#342 of 1856)

But Trump openly paraded his indecency. He bragged about it.

it's not as if every "red crisis" ends with the whole American people seeing reason. (and certainly we have had such "crises" before.) it is enough if the sympathy for the crusaders wanes significantly.

sympathy for trump is waning. enough so that the trump-aligned party big shots try to keep polling info from their lesser accomplice officials.

But Trump openly paraded his indecency. He bragged about it.

It is part of his appeal.

Christ.

from MSNBC. (I'd link to the Washington Post story, but I'm paywalled.)

https://www.msnbc.com/transcripts/transcript-beat-ari-melber-5-10-21-n1266908

<<MELBER: That`s what the opposition looks like.

But we`re increasingly seeing the signs that that`s a minority opposition. And Republican leaders are so scared of Donald Trump that they`re not just lying in public, lying to their own constituents, lying about how democracy works, and what the results the election are. All of that is a big deal.

There`s also reporting that Republican leaders were hiding how unpopular Trump is from their own members. So, they had a rank-and-file meeting with polling that showed, in core battleground states, more voters strongly opposed Trump than favored him.

And "The Washington Post" finds that they just hid that in an internal briefing. This is a Republican Party so committed to some kind of warped alternative reality of what happened in November, that they got thumped, that they lost the White House and the Senate, but they still can`t seem to face the fact that that truth won`t go away, even if you lie to yourself and your own teammates.>>

Is it possible that they're doing this clown dance in fear of being primaried out of the race?

Christ.

Do you not believe his indecency was part of his appeal then?

I truly believe it was

TheSwearingBear - 11 May 2021 16:02:32 (#349 of 1856)

I didn't say that in disbelief, more like disgust.

slimpickins - 11 May 2021 16:08:39 (#350 of 1856)

The Rep plan is to introduce voting laws that not only restrict voting for those they don't like but perhaps more crucially, gives their 'elected' officials the power to overrule state officials. That would avoid the problem of results being declared and them not being able to do anything about them. By 2024 they most certainly will be.

The Dems needs to pass the Fed voting law act, the future of the US as a democracy is in the greasy hands of Joe Manchin.

PaperRustler - 11 May 2021 16:42:41 (#351 of 1856)

I was referencing the 'Have you no decency?' speech that was the beginning of the end for McCarthy. He didn't actually have any either.

Garden - 11 May 2021 17:00:29 (#352 of 1856)

He increased their vote in the presidential election from Romney's 61 million to 63 million in 2016 and 74 million last year. He can turn out voters no other Republican can. There's solid political reasons they can't/won't turn their backs on him.

He's also a huge voter motivator for those who want him defeated.

He lost support among white college educated males, for heaven's sake. He's got some pockets of support in important electoral college states, but by and large the only thing his supporters can do in most other places is decide who wins the Republican primary.

The rest of us are so sick of Tea Partiers and Trumpism that we'll continue to show up in record numbers.

Sure, Ted -

Sen. Cruz says that S1, which would be one of the most sweeping expansions of ballot access in US history, is actually "Jim Crow 2.0"

Cruz, who voted to throw out 2020 election results in Congress, says Democrats are trying to put their “thumb on the scale” of elections by advancing a bill he says “steals voting rights”

I was reading an article about the shooting of 4 innocent students in Ohio in the 70s by the National guard.

There were reports then of people saying things along the line of ‘good’ and ‘should have shot more of them’ and so on. Reports of people believing that it was all a hoax and so on. The teenager who was photographed giving aid to a shot student was threatened and harassed for years. Very similar to some of the stuff from today.

Tinymcsmithy - 11 May 2021 18:32:43 (#357 of 1856)

On another topic.

“ “I want these fat guys off my detail,” Trump is reported to have said, possibly confusing office-based personnel with active agents. “How are they going to protect me and my family if they can’t run down the street?””

Federal authorities probing Rep. Matt Gaetz are attempting to turn one of his former girlfriends against him, as investigators seek to secure the cooperation of a former Capitol Hill intern who previously dated the Republican lawmaker, CNN reported Tuesday morning.

According to the report, investigators believe the unidentified girlfriend accompanied Gaetz and several others on a 2018 trip to the Bahamas that stands at the center of the probe into whether the Florida congressman violated federal sex trafficking laws and had sex with a minor.
