Trumpocalypse XV: Old Man Yells At Cloud

You know the drill.

popstar7 - 12 May 2021 02:03:25 (#381 of 1853)

"Why don't Republicans speak out??!! Why don't they say something??!!"

<Leading Republican speaks out/says something>

"Fuck Liz Cheney. Remember WMD!"

Garden - 12 May 2021 02:10:34 (#382 of 1853)

There are arguments to be made that the Cheney wing of the Republican party put in place the necessary conditions for the Trump takeover of the government. Besides, one of her goals is to deprive women the right of control over their own bodies. And don't get me started on where she stands on people who aren't just like her.

So I'll never admire the woman.

But she can be useful.

Garden - 12 May 2021 02:30:37 (#383 of 1853)

You're right, though, Popstar. That's a good speech, worth listening to and heeding.

But her father's career is a total repudiation of the notion that reverence for the rule of law is a feature of conservatism.

Tinymcsmithy - 12 May 2021 04:36:56 (#384 of 1853)

The Cheney’s are scumbags who aren’t worth the shit on our shoes.

That one of them is in a bun fight with another faction of their party* is perhaps useful, but that doesn’t make her any less of a scumbag.

* (and let’s not delude ourselves that this is anything other that)

PaperRustler - 12 May 2021 06:32:23 (#385 of 1853)

I take popstar's point - that we complain about Republican silence and then criticise the few Republicans who stand up to be counted - but the Cheneys sure have a lot of baggage. That said, that's an excellent speech and I see no reason to doubt her sincerity on this. Anyone still in retention of their faculties would feel the way she does. I don't think it's just a factional squabble among Republicans.

Tinymcsmithy - 12 May 2021 07:05:22 (#386 of 1853)

I'm sure she has some sincerity of some sort - if we can call it that. I just don't think it's worth 0.1% of our brainpower or emotions giving a shit about it for such a repulsive individual.

And I've never called for or expected Republicans to condemn Trump. It's an irrelevance. Her aim is to try to reclaim power, by positioning herself for a longer game for when this shitshow comes tumbling down (or failing that, a book and an MSNBC career). In that sense it's a power struggle IMO.

Tinymcsmithy - 12 May 2021 07:06:40 (#387 of 1853)

Anyway, I came to say that Rand Paul is a fucking twat.

TRaney - 12 May 2021 09:14:50 (#388 of 1853)

but I also think we can use Liz Cheney to further our side, so she's useful.

To call on Republicans to put country before party then make partisan use of it would seem to feed the problem rather than solve it.

Crayola - 12 May 2021 09:41:38 (#389 of 1853)

1 - I hate having to agree with a Cheney

2 - I can't believe no one has hacked 'from the desk of ...' yet

3 - Please no one talk about 'probing' Matt Gaetz

Thank you.

The enemy of a devil is not a saint but another devil.

Isolde2 - 12 May 2021 10:48:58 (#391 of 1853)

"The enemy of a devil is not a saint but another devil."

Off-topic to mention the UK, but that could be a way to get rid of the government here in the UK. Be a sheep in wolf's clothing. Wrest power by pretence, use stealth, gradually pull towards the left, just like the Tories have done. Cameron proclaimed compassion before his election. Boris promised to keep the NHS, level up - while pursuing real policies in the background.

Tadagee - 12 May 2021 14:01:27 (#392 of 1853)

Try to parse this bit of old man yelling at clouds, or rather wind turbines.

"Congratulations to Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts for the privilege they will have in looking at massive windmills that have been approved by the Biden Administration and are being built, in China of course, as part of an extraordinarily large wind farm. Wind is an incredibly expensive form of energy that kills birds, affects the sea, ruins the landscape, and creates disasters for navigation. Liberals love it, but they can’t explain why. In any event, Martha’s Vineyard, an absolutely wonderful place, will never be the same. Good Luck!"

cozzer - 12 May 2021 14:11:21 (#393 of 1853)

Wind is [...] [a] form of energy that [...] affects the sea

Well, he's not wrong

Tadagee - 12 May 2021 14:16:07 (#394 of 1853)

tbf It's also created disasters for navigation. Esp before turbine powered craft.

dreams99 - 12 May 2021 14:33:29 (#395 of 1853)

Liberals love it, but they can’t explain why

Not in ways you can understand. You think wind turbines cause cancer, and when they stop the tv goes off. It's hard to explain science stuff to someone so dumb.

brooklyn - 12 May 2021 14:43:00 (#396 of 1853)

<<Martha’s Vineyard, an absolutely wonderful place, will never be the same.>>

true, in that (like a lot of other places) it will have cleaner energy. false, in that the turbines will be 12 miles off the shore.

<<are being built, in China of course....>>

false, of course. much of the equipment will have to come from Europe, as our development of wind farming is for now behind Europe's. but "buy American when you can" provisions will be made.

There are a lot of turbine manufacturers in Germany. They have huge numbers of them onshore, particularly in the East.

50 Hz is a large offshore development, which I've worked on.

BenVrackie - 12 May 2021 15:12:26 (#398 of 1853)

He's still upset about the turbines that 'spoiled' the view from his golf course in Aberdeenshire. (The construction of which itself destroyed a scientifically significant local environment site and wildlife reserve.)

SinnerBoy - 12 May 2021 15:14:11 (#399 of 1853)

The dunes at Balmedie, which I used to visit regularly, when I lived in Aberdeen.

PaperRustler - 12 May 2021 15:28:17 (#400 of 1853)

Well, Cheney is ousted from her position as conference chair. I guess that was a foregone conclusion.

Meanwhile, Adam Kinzinger shows Matt Gaetz what one version of 'ratio' means:
