1968

Now that was a year, what with Vietnam, Paris, Prague and all the rest of it. Yippies versus Daley in Chicago, MLK and Robert Kennedy shot, but it's the shooting of Nguyễn Văn Lém that you saw take place, even if you've never heard his name before. Powell went proper doolally on Hitler's birthday, and a couple of Apollos were launched. What quinquagentennials should we be remembering?

Also, is "quinquagentennial" a word? It could be, but it only gets one hit, which doesn't bode well. I have the feeling that there's a much more common word, but it escapes me. No, not golden jubilee.

Semicentennial?

Snarlygog - 26 Jan 2018 16:53:02 (#3 of 91)

I was born for a start.

Delighted_User - 26 Jan 2018 16:55:17 (#4 of 91)

Hey, it's more than a start. Given the popularity of this thread, you should easily get away with claiming credit for the entire year.

It was also the year of the Hongkong flu. I remember I had it and was quite ill.

1968: Soul Power. A great, though unrecognised album.

It was also the year of the Hongkong flu. I remember I had it and was quite ill.

So you were a bit Hong Kong Fluey?

Channel Four had a series 68/88 to mark the twentieth anniversary. Hard to imagine that happening now. Tariq Ali was inevitably in the mix.

xbod72 - 26 Jan 2018 17:06:35 (#9 of 91)

Well, yes Shadrack, dear chap, it is hard to imagine having the 20th anniversary of 1968 in 2018.

1968: starving children in Biafra. I remember shocking photos.

Delighted_User - 26 Jan 2018 17:10:11 (#11 of 91)

Is base 25 widely used?

RosyLovelady - 26 Jan 2018 17:11:34 (#12 of 91)

The anti-Vietnam war march. The scary police using their horses as weapons against unarmed demonstrators like oneself in Grosvenor Square.

wickeltisch - 26 Jan 2018 17:11:47 (#13 of 91)

What is base 25?

My mum arrived in England via a cruise from Sabah, stopping at Ceylon and Cape Town, a move that would soon lead to a terrible marriage and my birth. Hey Jude was released. I think it was the year of the Mexico Olympics where loads of world records were broken due to the high altitude. The White Album as well.

De Gaulle sulking in Colombey-les-deux-Eglises.

wickeltisch - 26 Jan 2018 17:14:32 (#16 of 91)

It was the year of my first visit to Paris. That was in May. I didn't notice much of the students' unrest.

RosyLovelady - 26 Jan 2018 17:15:42 (#17 of 91)

I saw even less of it in July 1968.

But did you not cross paths with the Situationists?

A way for some of us to be in our 20s, Frau Tisch.

Gotout - 26 Jan 2018 17:22:47 (#20 of 91)

I was just 20 and thought that the future looked great.
