Franco to be evicted from his mausoleum

Spain is finally removing Franco's remains from the Valley of the Fallen, the huge and bombastic mausoleum burrowed into a hill.

ish-government-approves-exhumation-of-dictator-francisco-franco

About 20 years ago, I went on a tour of Spain (organised by The Guardian), including a visit to the Valley of the Fallen. We were rather depressed (but not surprised) to learn that monks from a nearby monastery laid fresh flowers on Francos's grave every day, but cheered up when we discovered that they needed to have two plain clothes guards on station to prevent people from spitting on it.

What's the p point?

AdrianNTierney - 24 Aug 2018 17:00:50 (#3 of 41)

It'll make Franco feel bad.

thisonehasalittlehat - 24 Aug 2018 17:01:40 (#4 of 41)

He strikes me as insensitive.

They should leave him where he is but build a toilet block on top

FleurDuMal - 24 Aug 2018 17:07:24 (#6 of 41)

Why should he have a monument when thousands of the Civil War dead are lying in unmarked graves?

Brunothecat - 24 Aug 2018 17:07:55 (#7 of 41)

For dogs. Just bulldoze the buildings and stone bits.

FleurDuMal - 24 Aug 2018 17:08:09 (#8 of 41)

Arjuna, Hitler’s bunker in Berlin has a car park on top!

Brunothecat - 24 Aug 2018 17:10:27 (#9 of 41)

Love to swap it with a statue of Stalin holding a note saying "suck it up, weeny 'tache".

I don't think Franco was that much like Hitler was he? Except in the way that all dictators are a bit like Hitler.

OldLefty - 24 Aug 2018 17:32:04 (#11 of 41)

Hitler and Franco detested each other. One of the few things to the credit of either of them.

The ferocity of his repression a year after the civil war finished apparently made Himmler blanche.

A Spanish workmate tells me he was killing people up to 20 years after he'd won.

He may not have had the gift of the gab like Adolf but he made up for it with the body count.

Intowntonight - 24 Aug 2018 18:08:23 (#13 of 41)

He was a very nasty bastard.

Scary workmate.

machiavelli - 24 Aug 2018 18:32:22 (#15 of 41)

Heh!

Unlike the Communists who did their mass killings during the civil war.

Jacob_Richter - 24 Aug 2018 20:55:31 (#17 of 41)

Franco - somewhere between 100,000 and 200,000 killed in the aftermath of the SCW.

Well, obviously he had to get rid of the Stalinists that had helped him out.

Only stopped from continuing by 'Spain's first astronaut'

(Blanco assassination)

Anybody who was suspected of mildly leftish views was sent to labour-camps where they were worked to death. Their children were incarcerated in brutal Catholic orphanages until they were re-homed with suitably right-wing childless parents.
