Kenneth Kaunda RIP

Kenneth Kaunda, Zambia's first president and one of the last of the generation of African leaders who fought colonialism, has died aged 97.

Kaunda was admitted to a military hospital in the capital, Lusaka, on Monday suffering from pneumonia. His aides said he did not have Covid-19.

I remember fondly his dressing down of Geoffrey Howe

He always seemed a reasonable person, compared to some of the other African leaders.

He had his faults but, unlike Mugabe, did step down instead of drowning the country in blood.

He had his faults

Doesn't everyone? Leaders especially, perhaps, or perhaps they're just more noticeable in leaders. And some are much worse than others, too, and Kaunda was a very long way from the worst among leaders.

My ex says that the 70s were good years in Zambia - the Health service was free at the point of delivery and good quality. The shops and plenty of stuff.

The collapse in the copper price, the regional wars and KKs tendency to nationalise companies saw off the good years, sadly.

Guy Arnold died in January 2020

How did he write that Guardian obit, then?

ZimAgain - 25 Jun 2021 11:26:45 (#8 of 9)

He's a ghost writer.

I guess they got him to produce a canned obit before he died. Would be a shame to waste it.
