Not inordinately.

They've launched a handful of unreliable rockets, carrying practically zero payload. The melted and burned husks of which occasionally managed to travel far enough to encourage the vested-interest sabre-rattlers on both sides of the political divide.

They have yet to demonstrate that they can build a nuclear package light and robust enough to put on a rocket.

Or a rocket which can carry any kind of payload an intercontinental distance.

Or the ability to manage the re-entry of a rocket without its destruction in the upper atmosphere. Without which, range is severely limited for reasons which Newton made clear in the 1600s.

Or any kind of basic guidance other than simple launch orientation.

Or any kind of rocket at all beyond 1950s technology liquid-fuelled dinosaur stuff, which is laughably vulnerable in the modern battlefield.

It suits Kim's game to do this kind of posturing thouh, and also suits a lot of the hawks in the Western world.

It really makes little difference to the actual situation, which consists of hundreds of pieces of well-tested conventional artillery emplaced comfortably in range of a city with twice the population of London (at three times the density).

Who've done fuck-all about it.

Tadagee - 29 Jul 2017 07:46:54 (#4 of 298)

What would you suggest?

sugarsnappeas - 29 Jul 2017 16:59:51 (#5 of 298)

Israeli activities to stop nuke plants in Syria and Iraq were quite effective. This should be the guide.

Remove the fat boy wonder simian inbred's nuke program, while making it clear we do not threaten his rule of his glorious socialist/red fascist workers paradise. However IF he responds militarily in any way, against anyone, he becomes fair game.

Now it's your turn to call me a warmonger, troll.

Macpaddy - 29 Jul 2017 17:04:24 (#6 of 298)

I for one welcome etc etc.

brooklyn - 29 Jul 2017 17:56:36 (#7 of 298)

I assume that they have the ability to nuke Seoul and Tokyo. so far, however -- insane as they are -- they have shown no tendency toward suicidal ideation.

I will be in Vancouver in a couple weeks, though. I'll have to watch my step.

The ex British ambassador to South Korea was on the radio this morning and he said we should be very worried. He reckons the Pentagon is in some turmoil at the progress of NK's missile programme, and that the judgement is that whereas they thought it would take 3 years for them to develop an ICBM, now they think it could be just a year.

Macpaddy - 29 Jul 2017 18:10:29 (#9 of 298)

That's the real danger. Trump deciding to ensure his place in history by ordering the wiping out of North Korea before it can wipe out a few American cities.

SunkenTreasures - 29 Jul 2017 18:42:36 (#10 of 298)

I think it's more likely China will bomb the shit out of them than the Americans doing it.

Earworm - 29 Jul 2017 18:52:09 (#11 of 298)

"I think it's more likely China will bomb the shit out of them"

The North Koreans have threatened China then? News to me.

HerrWalrus - 30 Jul 2017 17:06:48 (#12 of 298)

Could China force a coup in north Korea?

dreams99 - 30 Jul 2017 17:09:54 (#13 of 298)

China isn't going to start a war in NK.

bossab2 - 30 Jul 2017 19:50:43 (#14 of 298)

The Beeb seems to publishing Anti China propaganda.

I'm sure this will go down well

China is in a tricky position, it does not want N Korean borders to open as millions of North Koreans would go straight to China. Last thing China wants is millions of refugees. Their preferred option is to keep the status quo by chucking In a few trade deals to keep the country going

sugarsnappeas - 02 Aug 2017 02:47:08 (#16 of 298)

China going after NK would be a direct repudiation of their own founding fat bastard Mao. Won't happen.

Plus at the end of the day, there are probably some or many in the chinese govt who would not at all be sorry to see NK nuking South Korea, Japan, the US, or all three. Weakened rivals is a plus for them in their opinion (though they would never openly admit it). Ditto Russia. We're not going to see either apply meaningful pressure on NK govt.

Chinese govt prefers instead to whine about THAAD (as does Russia which probably has more missile defense than any other military) and has an unofficial boycott of South Korea. That says a lot.

I do like Trumps idea of using trade to to influence Chinese govt on the issue. it won't work but puts them on the defensive (that hit a sore spot).

machiavelli - 02 Aug 2017 05:00:03 (#17 of 298)

Yawn! Has the little fatty continued his forebears periodic attention-grabbing? Cue the usual outrage from the US in this dreary little morality play whenever the Norks chuck another rocket into the sea.

upgoerfive - 02 Aug 2017 23:38:30 (#18 of 298)

Precisely.

Though it does seem to suit U.S. purposes to big up Lil' Kim for some reason just now.

Just waiting for the 'Ready in 45 minutes' stuff.

sugarsnappeas - 04 Aug 2017 06:02:12 (#19 of 298)

i'm sure lil kim would welcome your talents in helping defend his concentration camp nation state from the evil US. off you go.

machiavelli - 04 Aug 2017 06:12:28 (#20 of 298)

He just needs a cuddle from Uncle Sam, bless him.
