"The UK, France, Germany, Russia and China were also parties to the 2015 accord and have stuck to it, saying they will set up a new payment system to maintain business with Iran and bypass US sanctions"

And in picking a fight with China over Iran has Trump trashed the American economy ?

Brutal week: Dow plunges 1,150 points

Dow plunges 1,150 points

Since the Dow has been enormously inflated in the last eight years, the loss is hardly surprising or unusual.

Back to normalcy is not a bad slogan, you see.

NB - 1,150 points is less than 2% of the market. Hardly a monstrous loss.

Relatedly, last week the CFO of Huawei was arrested by Canada "on orders of the USA" in Vancouver over Iran sanctions violations.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-46494935

Dumb move by the Canadians imho.

HoHoHoff - 09 Dec 2018 17:34:40 (#5 of 24)

Very dodgy judicial overreach by the Seppos

brooklyn - 09 Dec 2018 17:38:59 (#6 of 24)

I can't see that, in general, there's a problem with enforcing sanctions. this one is weird, though. these seem to be the Iran sanctions that trump reinstated because he is an idiot. and he's the idiot who let Xi talk him out of penalizing the chinese tech world for the real problem with our china trade, their intellectual property theft.

HoHoHoff - 09 Dec 2018 17:42:26 (#7 of 24)

If they were internationally agreed sanctions I'd agree. But the U.S. unilaterally pulled out of an agreement and told everyone else they can't trade with Iran. Fuck off.

The sooner we have a non-U.S Swift alternative the better.

HoHoHoff - 09 Dec 2018 17:43:12 (#8 of 24)

Soz. I pounded my keyboard before reading your post properly.

TRaney - 09 Dec 2018 17:44:08 (#9 of 24)

Swift isn’t American

HoHoHoff - 09 Dec 2018 17:53:36 (#10 of 24)

But the yanks can control who used it. Or is that mastercard/visa? God knows. Anyway, something must be done.

Geribaldi - 09 Dec 2018 18:02:13 (#11 of 24)

Brooklyn - "these seem to be the Iran sanctions that trump reinstated because he is an idiot."

No, the idiot was Obama in getting rid of the sanctions for a shit nuclear deal and sending over billions of dollars on pallets to a regime that is a state sponsor of terrorism.

"and he's the idiot who let Xi talk him out of penalizing the chinese tech world for the real problem with our china trade, their intellectual property theft."

Actually, he's doing a lot more to reign in Chinese trade abuses than his predecessor, who, per usual, did nothing.

HoHoHoff - 09 Dec 2018 18:22:25 (#12 of 24)

a state sponsor of terrorism

Quite. They've been bombing the shit out of civilians in Yemen for years, causing famine at an epic scale.

*holds earpiece*

No, sorry, that's fine. It was our best buds doing it. Move along.

moto748 - 09 Dec 2018 18:25:00 (#13 of 24)

Good job no US allies are sponsors of terrorism, isn't it, Geri?

AshburtonAbove - 09 Dec 2018 18:30:58 (#14 of 24)

You're silly Geri.

Geribaldi - 09 Dec 2018 18:31:54 (#15 of 24)

Iran has a long history of state sponsored terrorism, if you deny that, you're rather dense.

SheikYerbouti - 09 Dec 2018 18:33:54 (#16 of 24)

Apropos nothing very much, a new name in the US establishment is Jerrold Nadler. What the fuck kind of a name is Jerrold? Are all Americans illiterate? Perhaps Geribaldi can enlighten us.

Geribaldi - 09 Dec 2018 18:37:34 (#17 of 24)

Nadler is new? He's been in Congress since 1992.

SheikYerbouti - 09 Dec 2018 18:39:50 (#18 of 24)

Answer the question, monkey boy, or get gone.

Geribaldi - 09 Dec 2018 18:55:35 (#19 of 24)

Perhaps we can exchange views when you actually know what the fuck you are talking about. Until then, piss off.

moto748 - 09 Dec 2018 18:59:04 (#20 of 24)

Iran has a long history of state sponsored terrorism, if you deny that

I don't. But if you making a list of "state sponsored terrorism" countries, you might as well include KSA, US, UK...

Thing is, in this non-binary world, nations can't be neatly separated into good guys and bad guys. And as noted upthread, the US is on its own on this one. Which seems to suit Trump just fine.
