Justin Trudeau just announced that intel from multiple sources indicates that the plane was brought down by a surface to air missile launched by Iran.

Jacob_Richter - 09 Jan 2020 19:46:16 (#2 of 63)

If true, I wonder what made them so jumpy.

Any ideas?

mingmong - 09 Jan 2020 19:48:31 (#3 of 63)

Does this mean Iran is going to play this by attacking US proxies in the region?

A shrewd move, I suppose. Puts Drumpf in an invidious position - does he allow himself to look weak, or go to war on behalf of a load of random foreign people? Neither really fits with the MAGA agenda he wants to be selling at the next election

Worth noting that we, the British, are probably now prime targets in the region

2 - decades of sponsoring terrorism, the assassination of their chief terrorist general, and those who pulled the trigger on sending Soleimani to hell openly claiming credit for it. Trump has thus far proven less likely to appease the Iranian govt than his predecessors. Were I them, I'd be jumpy as well.

Supposedly video of it:

<<Does this mean Iran is going to play this by attacking US proxies in the region?>>

it's a bit hard to believe that they've chosen to do it by killing a lot of Iranian passengers.

SinnerBoy - 09 Jan 2020 23:08:41 (#7 of 63)

sugarsnappeas -

No, it's seven decades of American sponsored terrorism, silly.

indlovubill - 10 Jan 2020 07:24:41 (#8 of 63)

Trump said the shooting down was probably a 'mistake', and of course mistakes happen as was the case when the Americans shot down an Iranian Airbus full of passengers.

No that they've chosen to, no. But that they are so incompetent that their attempts to attack US, US allies and US proxy targets has only resulted in the deaths of 176 civilians, mainly Iranian, does seem to fit the evidence. Plus the trampling to death of 55 mourners at the funeral of course.

They've certainly lost any street cred they gained through snatching those oil tankers.

Agaliarept - 10 Jan 2020 10:09:31 (#11 of 63)

Civilian Jetliner leaving Tehran shot down

I must be tired. I read this as Caitlyn Jenner leaving Tehran shot down.

SinnerBoy - 10 Jan 2020 11:43:36 (#12 of 63)

Well, virtually nobody would complain about that.

Hilary - 10 Jan 2020 12:28:55 (#13 of 63)

What was he doing in Tehran?

browserbutton - 10 Jan 2020 13:09:47 (#14 of 63)

Iran now clearing the crash site with bulldozers (according to Bellingcat).

Agaliarept - 10 Jan 2020 13:15:25 (#15 of 63)

Well, virtually nobody would complain about that.

Heh.

Jacob_Richter - 10 Jan 2020 20:22:58 (#16 of 63)

Getting less publicity - oddly:

More than 60 civilians were killed or wounded in a US drone attack targeting a top Taliban splinter-group commander in the western Afghanistan province of Herat, local officials said.

brooklyn - 10 Jan 2020 21:46:08 (#17 of 63)

well. to be fair, the Iran thing is as a kind of US/Iran war may break out. the Afghan war is pretty old news. plus, it's not like the Taliban wear uniforms.

<<Quoting Wakil Ahmad Karkhi, a member of the Herat provincial council, TOLO News reported "civilians have been killed and wounded alongside Mullah Nangyalai's fighters" in an American attack on Wednesday.>>

I dunno. what's a civilian? everybody on the plane was a civilian.

guigal - 10 Jan 2020 23:40:39 (#18 of 63)

it's not like the Taliban wear uniforms

Not when off duty.

Verdigris - 11 Jan 2020 07:29:42 (#19 of 63)

Iran finally admit they shot down the plane, albeit accidentally.

dottie30 - 11 Jan 2020 07:32:51 (#20 of 63)

Sort of explains their half-hearted response to Suleimani's killing.
