Trouble brewing:

"China has voiced opposition to Taiwan joining a major trans-Pacific trade deal as it flew 24 planes – including two nuclear-capable bombers – into the self-ruled island’s air defence zone, the biggest incursion in weeks, Taiwanese officials said."

The aircraft movements are peanuts but the CPTPP membership issue opens a serious rift.

Taiwan can do what it likes. The PRC can fuck off

A Sino-US war is one thing that really would bring an end to the world as we know it. Both sides know that, and will go some way to avoid it. Ditching Taiwan may end up being the price that has to be paid.

Christ - you're talking about people I care about being enslaved by that monstrous regime occupying Beijing

TheExcession - 24 Sep 2021 10:29:18 (#5 of 716)

Same here.

Possibly the one thing the USA has done right since the end of the Second World War is defending Taiwan from Mao, Deng, Xi and all those other horrors.

I share your view about the PRC. War, one day, is inevitable. People will look back at this like we look back at WW2. Except this time we can't pretend we didn't know about the concentration camps.

Shadrack22 - 24 Sep 2021 10:40:51 (#8 of 716)

Taiwan is the country China could have been - liberal, democratic, relaxed and outward facing.

chacqueschirac - 24 Sep 2021 09:53:02 (#9 of 716)

That's putting an overly optimistic gloss on it.

Taiwan could take advantage of two facts:

- Small enough to be granted extensive trade privileges

- Access to the labour market in the mainland

War, one day, is inevitable.

Why?

Dementor - 24 Sep 2021 10:58:27 (#11 of 716)

World Service was just talking about this - China having spent the last twenty years building a military capability to take Taiwan quickly enough to prevent a US defence.

TheExcession - 24 Sep 2021 11:39:07 (#12 of 716)

"Access to the labour market in the mainland"

Some Taiwanese firms have essentially done this by conducting the R&D work in Taiwan and constructing factories on the mainlaind to build the stuff. Foxconn MSI (who make PC components and iPhones) are a good example of this.

chacqueschirac - 24 Sep 2021 11:00:52 (#13 of 716)

Exactly.

#3 I posted something I regretted and apologise. I still think that is a craven and cowardly attitude. How many friends and allies wlll you bury to appease Chinese fascism.

The idea that the USA, a country that just had it's ass chucked out of little old Afganistan, could present any threat to China today is hilarious.

The west is fucked. Our shelves are bare, our fuel stations empty, our power stations without fuel. Every major public, private and political organisation is run by idiots. There's no unity of purpose at all. This took decades to achieve and won't be easily reversed.

China has a standing army of a million, all devoted to fighting to the death for China. It owns the world's manufacturing industries and most of the resources.

The future is Chinese.

Totally different types of warfare. Not that I'd want to test the hypothesis.

As with Vietnam and Afghanistan, they could destroy China. With Vietnam and Afghanistan this was politically unacceptable. With China, they'd be destroyed in turn.

<<The west is fucked. Our shelves are bare....>>

I just had a pretty good breakfast. nothing special, just fresh fruit. but it will get me to dinner.

AdonisBlue - 24 Sep 2021 14:41:07 (#20 of 716)

#17 That's true. Afganistan is a relatively small developing country with a very limited economy and resources. China has the largest and best equipped army on the planet. Plus it can switch off supplies of pretty much everything to the rest of the planet when it chooses. It also has nukes.
