Upset in Barbados as Queen OUSTED by crazed republicans

After 396 years, the sun has set on the British monarchy’s reign over the Caribbean island of Barbados, with a handover ceremony at midnight on Monday marking the birth of the world’s newest republic. Barbadians in Bridgetown’s former Trafalgar Square (now Heroes Square) sobbed as the Royal Standard flag representing the Queen was lowered by the new republican government.

85 year old Sir Garfield Sobers is devastated “The Queen was very highly appreciated here. It will be very sad for a lot of us. It was a bit of a shock.”

I must admit, Sobers was very much on my "thought he was already dead" list.

Is this one of the benefits of Brexit?

< It was a bit of a shock. >

Not much of a shock, though, happily.

Seem they've been mulling the idea over since 1979 so...

ReverendBlueJeans - 30 Nov 2021 10:02:04 (#6 of 34)

Hmmm - becoming independent and then becoming a republic, both on St Andrew's Day?

There's an idea...

Seem they've been mulling the idea over since 1979 so...

Getting it done before they get King Charles seems like a reasonable incentive.

In the case of Barbados, I suppose EU aid and trade has not been affected by Brexit and the country will continue to benefit from its membership of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States and its ties to the EU. What downside could there be in booting out the monarch?

Send in the Royal Anglican Regiment!

"On behalf of a grateful nation, but an even prouder people, we therefore present to you the designee for national hero of Barbados, Ambassador Robyn Rihanna Fenty."

She can meet up with Sir Elton John.

If republic status is good for Barbados, surely it must be good for the UK too.

Do the SNP/Indy's want a Republic?

Atticus - 30 Nov 2021 19:26:23 (#16 of 34)

Ah. Apparently the SNP officially advocate keeping the Queen as head of an independent Scotland.

HerrWalrus - 30 Nov 2021 19:28:38 (#17 of 34)

But it'll be Charlie soon enough.

He looks fab in a kilt

RosyLovelady - 30 Nov 2021 19:56:03 (#19 of 34)

No one looks fab in a kilt.

Tomnoddy - 30 Nov 2021 20:08:38 (#20 of 34)

I agree with Rosy. Although it's usually the accoutrements that go with it that bring the tone down.

A sweater and kilt are more relaxed.
