Capitalism Will Eat Itself

Where do you get your “news”?

What do you think is going on?

Do we still get reliable information to make realistic decisions?

virgil5 - 09 Mar 2022 16:20:07 (#1 of 20)

Just about everything is paywalled.

Expect that to continue.

“Just The Talk” is an island of “sanity”.

Not sure how long it can last.

Thanks, Johnny

bailliegillies - 09 Mar 2022 16:20:27 (#2 of 20)

It will kill us all first.

virgil5 - 09 Mar 2022 16:28:58 (#3 of 20)

We’re only as good as our informed decisions.

I see that being squeezed into a smaller and smaller sphere while people have to pay more and more to keep even marginally “informed”.

And now we see the rise of deliberately deceptive media like Breitbart and Q Anon misleading many.

ReverendBlueJeans - 09 Mar 2022 16:30:31 (#4 of 20)

Newspapers were always paywalled.

You could read them in the library.

You still can.

bailliegillies - 09 Mar 2022 16:32:19 (#5 of 20)

Agree we are only as good as we're informed but hasn't it always been that way, only knowing what "our betters" wanted us to know.

virgil5 - 09 Mar 2022 16:34:37 (#6 of 20)

Who do you trust to bring you reliable news?

Seems to me that’s being made more and more difficult by good old fashioned greed.

CarlosFandango - 09 Mar 2022 16:34:40 (#7 of 20)

Ian Hislop has been very good on this.

Ultimately there's a rather obvious get what you pay for aspect to journalism.

bailliegillies - 09 Mar 2022 16:34:51 (#8 of 20)

You could read them in the library.

Don't seem to be in our library anymore.

bailliegillies - 09 Mar 2022 16:37:32 (#9 of 20)

I've lost faith in most of our media, it all seemed to go downhill when Murdock bought the Times, then everyone started playing catchup to see who could reach the bottom first.

virgil5 - 09 Mar 2022 16:42:53 (#10 of 20)

Newspapers, Gawd bless ‘em, have fallen behind the cutting internet edge.

We see this happening now in reporting on Ukraine.

You might find out what was going on a few weeks later.

ReverendBlueJeans - 09 Mar 2022 16:49:13 (#11 of 20)

Don't seem to be in our library anymore.

Perhaps nt paper copies (though ours does) but if you use library PCs you can access the online versions.

bailliegillies - 09 Mar 2022 16:56:38 (#12 of 20)

Perhaps not paper copies (though ours does) but if you use library PCs you can access the online versions.

Aye but you still have those that are paywalled*, so can't get the whole story.

*Tor with noscript helps with some.

virgil5 - 09 Mar 2022 16:58:47 (#13 of 20)

The problem imo is: by the time the reading public finds out what’s going on, the leading players have moved their game, anticipating public reaction.

Thus you get (really….Criminal) “actors” like Trump and Putin trying to set the agenda and dominate the dialogue.

I know it was ever thus, but the Digital Age has increased the pace.

Thus my feeling it will all lead to Capitalism Eating Itself even faster

bailliegillies - 09 Mar 2022 17:04:04 (#14 of 20)

More it will self destruct* because greed is getting out of hand and leading to stupidity.

Was this not predicted?

virgil5 - 09 Mar 2022 17:09:41 (#15 of 20)

The technology has made it easier than ever for stupidity for its own sake to rule the day.

Thus we get some of the most stupid strategies issuing from politicians who know they can get away with it because they’re representing morons

Tomnoddy - 09 Mar 2022 17:19:28 (#16 of 20)

Amen, bro.

virgil5 - 09 Mar 2022 17:25:39 (#17 of 20)

Does stupidity lead inevitably to Fascism, or does it just enable those to whom “fascism” is just a convenient way to keep from rocking their gravy boat?

Either way it seems to be wittingly or unwittingly enabled

Now, more than ever, it’s up to the concerned individual to try and keep ahead of it, but it’s getting more expensive all the time.

Will people continue to care?

Fingers crossed.

balkanwise - 09 Mar 2022 17:28:48 (#18 of 20)

"Thanks Johny".Absolutely.

virgil5 - 09 Mar 2022 17:35:40 (#19 of 20)

(((Johnny The Sailor)))

“Capitalism Will Eat Itself”

I say that with regret, because Capitalism is slightly better than the Chinese or Russian totalitarian “Capitalist” models with some room still for realistic individual initiative, but sadly a growing reliance on lazy greed before any rational attempt at responsibility.

The easy money. Schemes to make even more money on top of the plenty of money already being made.

The rich just keep on getting richer. Rich enough to try and rig the game to stay getting richer regardless of any inconvenient scruples that might be lingering in the system.

“Money is free speech” says the Supreme Court, so now you get scads of money buying whatever the ultra rich want for themselves.

Capitalism will eat itself because “Greed is good”.
