Tory Heaven: the forgotten 1948 novel that predicted a Conservative dystopia

Marghanita Laski’s razor-sharp satire offered a vision of a brutal Tory government.

Laski’s message, here and throughout the novel, is twofold: not only that the war had acted as an entirely beneficial solvent in the breaking down of class barriers, but that in Britain an authoritarian regime was as likely to emerge from the right as from the left.

This is my take on post war UK history. A dreadful war (albeit fought abroad) resulting in largely peaceful positive, progressive cooperation and tolerance.

A rearguard reactionary thrust to smother the above in incremental steps, where these develop into increasing malaise as it boulders along.

What I find most distressing and depressing is that all the Eurohate, wall-to-wall Farridge-Mogg, homelessness, food banks is that the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off due to austerity and some type of war will be declared, in order to "put things right".

You see, Enoch couldn't quite pull it off 50 years ago...

But Farage did.

It's all Weimar republic without the charms of decadence.

I think the charms of decadence could only be found in Berlin, not in other places of the Weimar republic.

Berlin was unique - though maybe Hamburg.

Marghanita Laski: one of those media personalities of the 1950/60s who would probably be called an "icon" nowadays.

She was the niece of the left-wing academic Harold Laski:he was vilified by the right wing press, not dissimilar to the way Ralph Miliband was.

Not a lot changes
