"Right now, something is happening and no one knows what it is,

the immediate future is largely inaccessible to thought and reasonable projection is constantly undermined, creating a truncated, vertiginous, haunted present."

This quote was at the end of a book review on Quietus. I thought it was a nice turn of phrase.

I've also seen pithier comments such as "The world is turning to shit".

Anyway, I thought it was something you all might like to discuss.

Who said that, a bookmaker?

A reviewer rather than maker.

I guess he may have made his own books too.

Something is happening here

But you don't know what it is.

Do you, Mister Jones?

You raise up your head

And you ask, “Is this where it is?”

And somebody points to you and says

“It’s his”

And you say, “What’s mine?”

And somebody else says, “Where what is?”

And you say, “Oh my God

Am I here all alone?”

Because something is happening here

But you don’t know what it is

Do you, Mister Jones?

Great song. Fab album.

< the immediate future is largely inaccessible to thought >

Does this mean to imply that the distant future is more accessible?

breakfast - 08 May 2018 21:09:58 (#6 of 20)

Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps.

We can collectively write it into being.

If we start thinking about how we think about the future.

creating a truncated, vertiginous, haunted present.

Haunted by what - fear of disaster? That is nothing new.

"Something has spoken to me in the night, burning the tapers of the waning year; something has spoken in the night, and told me I shall die, I know not where. Saying: “To lose the earth you know, for greater knowing; to lose the life you have for greater life; to leave the friends you loved, for greater loving; to find a land more kind than home, more large than earth. Whereon the pillars of this earth are founded, toward which the conscience of the world is tending-a wind is rising, and the rivers flow.”

Thomas Wolfe - Look Homeward Angel? Intoxicating at the right age.

breakfast - 08 May 2018 22:36:58 (#13 of 20)

Haunted by fear of the unknown, uncertain possibilities including disaster. Nothing new but heightened at this current time.

I actually truncated the paragraph as it refers to particular concepts of utopias discussed in the review. It continues like this "creating a truncated, vertiginous, haunted present that is both exhilarating and anxiety-inducing, oscillating in the imagination (and partially in practice) between real and unconstrained Utopias and numerous looming dystopias."

the past is failure

the present is shit

the future is plans to clean

Résumé

Razors pain you,

Rivers are damp,

Acids stain you,

And drugs cause cramp.

Guns aren't lawful,

Nooses give,

Gas smells awful.

You might as well live.

Something's happening and it's happening right now

Ain't got time to wait

I said something better change

I said something better change

I said something better change

< If we start thinking about how we think about the future ... >

... then we can have a grown-up conversation about it. There's a plan.
