Humans are the dinosaurs, AIs are the mammals?

Are the human race's days numbered? Have we doomed ourselves through our poor stewardship of our environment and numerous other bad choices? Has humanity created its own successor in the form of artificial intelligence?

Well, not really. If we assume that the nomenclature continues, it's difficult to see how we will be regarded as, "Thunder Lizards".

HerrWalrus - 26 Jun 2018 21:23:38 (#2 of 25)

Gah. -10 points.

JerkinMcGherkin - 26 Jun 2018 21:26:15 (#3 of 25)

Well there's a fair few round my way on a Friday night who would count as "chunder gizzards."

AlanII - 26 Jun 2018 21:26:57 (#4 of 25)

Pavement Pizzards.

kvelertak - 26 Jun 2018 21:29:21 (#5 of 25)

AI not embodied in a self-replicating machine isn't going to outlast anything much.

Dayraven - 26 Jun 2018 21:37:15 (#6 of 25)

I think you’re rather overestimating AI as it currently stands. In terms of the development of mammals, it isn’t even anywhere near Dimetrodon yet.

JerkinMcGherkin - 26 Jun 2018 21:45:06 (#7 of 25)

But the trajectory for the potential of AIs is upwards. Can the same be said of humans?

Tadagee - 26 Jun 2018 21:46:04 (#8 of 25)

I was at a lecture on AI recently.

Obviously impossible to say but apparently the thinking is that it will be around the year 2040 when AI overtakes humans in reasoning.

Bonusy - 26 Jun 2018 21:54:02 (#9 of 25)

The comparison is flawed as dinosaurs are still around, only we now call them birds, and they steal chips off unsuspecting mammals

Any future prediction more than 10 years ahead is a number someone just pulled out of their arse. Even 5 year predictions tend to be pretty ropey

Well, intelligence may well be an evolutionary dead end.

Factor in the shrinking Y chromosome and our species may well be extinct within 50,000 years.

Nobody can know whether another species will develop our level of intelligence, or, if they do, that they will be interested enough to care enough to bother finding out.

And Leeds still won't have got promoted.

Well, intelligence may well be an evolutionary dead end.

There is a school of thought that regards it and, more specifically, human culture as a maladaptation.

And Leeds still won't have got promoted.

You are too pessimistic, Tada. After spending most of the 47000's in the lower reaches of the People's Republic of Yorvik Junior League Division 4 they will trounce Batley Under 14s in the playoff final and take their rightful place in the third division.

WibbleAgain - 27 Jun 2018 22:34:27 (#14 of 25)

There is a school of thought that regards it and, more specifically, human culture as a maladaptation.

I thought the humans adapt far too well for their own good, and are victims of their own success.

ie A maladaptation. I disagree by the way. I think we can work our way through this.

We are stardust, Wibbs, and the shine rubbed off us a long time ago.

AlanII - 27 Jun 2018 22:40:27 (#17 of 25)

Say star stuff and, I agree.

uranrising - 28 Jun 2018 12:02:33 (#18 of 25)

I thought human had a series of other faculties, abilities, qualities apart from intelligence.

FrankieTeardrop - 28 Jun 2018 12:05:50 (#19 of 25)

Humans are the universe observing itself.

pranzingfrogg - 28 Jun 2018 12:26:56 (#20 of 25)

There’s a school of thought that regards intelligence - Which is the ability to think - as a bad idea?
