Why don't we allow the elderly infirm and terminally ill people all the recreational drugs they might want?

I've always been an opponent of euthanasia, but the march of time often brings a really unenviable decline, physically or mentally (often the former generating the latter)

To spare a long OP: Is there any logical reason why we can't just wham someone in, say, late stage dementia, a load of OxyContin, MDMA or whatever? What's the risk, that their brain might go down hill? That may may become a bit dependent on moderate doses by the time they hit 94?

I suspect it's because we still have culture that fundamentally mistrusts the idea of having an ok time without "deserving" it.

But isn't it a partial way of addressing the social care crisis?

Why wouldn't some bright spark small "l" liberal politican run with this?

Enterprising oldies could supplement their pension by flogging some of their stash.

MDMA alleviates dementia or something.

tasselhoff - 11 Jan 2022 14:18:30 (#3 of 16)

Yeah, there are studies on ketamine, mushies and MDMA as they improve the "plasticity" of the brain, allowing it to make new contacts between synapses (or something like that).

Also useful for PTSD, depression etc.

Why would an old fart suddenly fancy dangerous sports or crave experiences?

I just want to rub along, function and enjoy what I can without my bones reminding me they are worn out all the time, other inevitable stiffness, pain or anxiety.

HarpoMarxist - 11 Jan 2022 15:03:34 (#16 of 16)

71 and still ski, (or did before the plague hit), the coke stopped 35 years ago ..
