My Mac crashed today!

Right in the middle of giving a lecture too.

KuangEleven - 02 Mar 2011 20:23:15 (#2 of 10726)

Lies! FUD!

One of the nice new features on the iPad 2 (besides it being thinner than an iPhone 4, which is not so much nice as fucking ridiculous) is display mirroring over HDMI: no cut down "presentation mode", just straight mirroring. Of course, depending on what you want to display, it might still not fit the bill, but it's a nice addition.

levelgaze - 02 Mar 2011 20:31:07 (#3 of 10726)

We have a new iMac at home. And I still have my old Mini with a shit monitor at work. I don't like being at work anymore.

stochata - 02 Mar 2011 20:34:34 (#4 of 10726)

Ha! I have this problem too. Home computers much better specced than work computers.

AppleCatcher - 02 Mar 2011 20:38:10 (#5 of 10726)

Fuck say. I ordered an iPad this afternoon. Before the iPad2 announcement. I am an idiot.

ChapeauNo5 - 02 Mar 2011 20:39:33 (#6 of 10726)

Fuck say Pommes.

KuangEleven - 02 Mar 2011 20:40:23 (#7 of 10726)

They'll normally let you change the order, I think. I've even heard of them sending out the newer model anyway, when there's no price difference (as is the case here), but I wouldn't rely on that. Give them a call.

AppleCatcher - 02 Mar 2011 20:40:28 (#8 of 10726)

Indeed. I will send it back and cancel as soon as I receive it and wait 3 extra weeks. Either I get the iPad1 much cheaper then or get a new iPad2.

Smollett - 02 Mar 2011 21:42:56 (#9 of 10726)

You can refuse to accept it when it's delivered - that's what they suggested to me once when I needed to cancel something.

Have they given a release date?

AppleCatcher - 02 Mar 2011 21:45:04 (#10 of 10726)

There's a 14day return policy thing. Release date is 22nd March, i.e. 3 weeks away. Very happy to wait that long, really.

Smollett - 02 Mar 2011 21:46:35 (#11 of 10726)

That cover is rather neat (although it's sold separately, of course).

Did anyone hear the rumour on Today this morning that Ives may be leaving Apple as he wants to educate his kids in the UK? Apparently he has a £2.5m mansion in Somerset so maybe I could pop round for advice now and then.

Smollett - 02 Mar 2011 23:14:53 (#12 of 10726)

Was it also before they slashed the price?

Emyr42 - 02 Mar 2011 23:18:54 (#13 of 10726)

My work computer is a Lenovo Thinkpad T410, i5@2.4GHz, 2GB RAM.

My home PC has an AMD A64-X2@3GHz, 2GB RAM.

The laptop wins over the PC because of a more modern CPU doing more per tick.

My partner has a 3GHz C2D iMac. She wins overall.

dmlc133 - 02 Mar 2011 23:35:49 (#14 of 10726)

User accounts have been disappearing from my iMac running 10.6.6. The home folders remain intact but the usernames no longer show up in the log in window or system preferences. Weird or what?

The new iPads are a thing of wonder. So very very thin.

KuangEleven - 03 Mar 2011 00:48:41 (#15 of 10726)

Same thickness, more or less, as my Kindle. Will be very interested to feel how much lighter the new ones are, subjectively.

Was it also before they slashed the price?

I was going to say that it's more of a nick than a slash, but if someone hacked off 20% of me, I'd probably feel differently.

Did anyone hear the rumour on Today this morning that Ives may be leaving Apple as he wants to educate his kids in the UK?

Yeah, though I heard that he was pissed at not getting enough recognition as the iPad's daddy, probably only because the idea that it's acrimonious is likely to attract more traffic. You'd think they'd be willing to move the whole design department to Bristol to keep him: losing the two highest-profile figures in the company in quick succession is going to get tongues a-wagging.

KuangEleven - 03 Mar 2011 01:45:10 (#16 of 10726)

Apple’s iPad 2 rollout was such an aggressive — and successful — demonstration of dominance that I wonder if they’ll be a follow-on effect on the upcoming tablet marketplace. Many manufacturers were poised at the starting line in the weeks before the iPad’s original announcement. The dazzling nature of the iPad, plus its $499 price tag, delayed the release of the first true iPad-class device until just a couple of weeks ago.

Now, all of these companies have the iPad 2 to deal with. And oh, goatspit: the price of every iPad 2 is the same as its predecessor ... including the $499 16 gig WiFi-only model. I wouldn’t be shocked if some high-profile manufacturers take full advantage of the fact that they never actually promised a ship date for their Android tablets ….

… Apple seems to be successfully pursuing the same strategy that works in any streetfight: keep knocking your opponent’s feet out from other him just when he’s about to get up. It doesn’t hurt that they also seem to be the only tablet manufacturer that diligently thinks their designs through from start to finish.

The price cut of iPad One seems to have caught some out. The Apple Store is offering refurb iPads for £50 more than new ones.

Smollett - 03 Mar 2011 09:42:59 (#19 of 10726)

They've just cut them, though. Now from £289. Very tempting.

stochata - 03 Mar 2011 09:57:27 (#20 of 10726)

Very tempting.

Very tempting indeed.
