Some Things That Need to Be Said. Amanda Hocking admits success was through loads of dedication, hard work and masses of self-marketing - which now leaves little time for writing.

"You can't stop working, because if you do, it unravels all the work you've already done. You have to keep going, or you'll die."

KuangEleven - 07 Mar 2011 23:29:19 (#4 of 976)

"Or at least that's how it feels."

Reminded me of this:

Not answering fan mail is the eminently sensible option, imo.

I think Hocking will be able to claim time back from the social networking as she develops confidence that people read her for her writing.

Or maybe they don't, and the say she unplugs, she'll sink forever. But I doubt it.

RT @jonahlehrer: My favorite description of twitter is by @stevesilberman. He said a tweet was like the dance of a bee, telling others where the honey is.

KuangEleven - 09 Mar 2011 21:35:43 (#8 of 976)

That's just fucking perfect. That's exactly it.

I want to register the domain, just so I can have the email address

sparafucile - 09 Mar 2011 21:37:32 (#10 of 976)

I know that's not really relevant to the thread. Just wanted to share.

KuangEleven - 09 Mar 2011 21:41:06 (#11 of 976)'s not available, but others are:

I don't have a social media strategy so much as Twitter accounts linked to related blogs which are only sporadically updated. I don't think that's the way it's supposed to work.

Teh marketing, I is doin it rong.

A Klout-like metric system that measures your profile across Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and something called Quora:

I played with the Twitter bit, but thought the immediate demands for more of my details were a bit intrusive.

It also does groups and comparisons, and is pretty to look at, but I don't think I'll be using it again.

I only did because a mad Italian philosophy professor asked me to.

Are you guys aware of Flipboard? Apple called it their iPad app of the year last year. It's pretty crazy. Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, RSS, now Instagram. There's a video about the recent update here:

Heh. Just spotted a pile of iPad boxes used as a laptop stand …

RT @jack: 5 years ago today we started programming Twitter ("twttr" for short). 8 days later the first tweet was sent:

There's a lot following that about the early development.

KuangEleven - 14 Mar 2011 03:12:10 (#17 of 976)

RT @jack: The name Twitter came from @Noah Glass & the Oxford English: "a short inconsequential burst of information, chirps from birds."

My favourite thing about the old anti-Twitter threads was the conviction that the people behind Twitter were totally unaware of what the name implied.

Pixiedust - 14 Mar 2011 21:33:10 (#18 of 976)

Is it Twitter's birthday? I feel like I sshould buy them some birdseed or something.

KuangEleven - 14 Mar 2011 21:44:05 (#19 of 976)

@jack is of the opinion that yesterday marked the conception, and we have a week to wait for the birthday.

Pixiedust - 14 Mar 2011 21:53:00 (#20 of 976)

What kind of bird is the Twitter bird? Different breeds need different feed.
