Is sewing the new baking? http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2013-02-27/the-great-british-sew-off---is-sewing-the-new-baking

It's good to see bees diversifying. The honey business may not be as secure as it was.
I know it's not directly related to the program, but it seems a good place to ask.
Does anyone know of a good book on the basics of altering/tailoring clothes to help them fit better?
Such as taking in waistbands in trousers, shortening sleeves etc. I'm a funny shape and shop bought clothes don't often fit well, and I'd like to look a bit less like a crazy bag lady.
Readers Digest Guide to Sewing is fairly comprehensive. I picked my copy up second hand - you can find them in charity shops quite often
I agree - good recommendation, pcmblonde.
I have an ancient copy myself. It came with handy paper patterns for bell bottomed trousers and smocked tops with tie belts.
I used to sew a lot, when you could actually save money by doing so. I did the kids' costumes when they were in school plays and pageants. But I don't do much garment sewing now. Unlike knitting, which I do a lot of, you can't sew and watch tv/dvd at the same time, either.
My gran was a time-served tailor and she could do anything, on a domestic sewing machine, too, though she did use attachments. Her stuff was better than you could buy, because she did beautiful lining, facing, and so on. She could do men's suits and coats.
I'm toying with the idea of doing a dress-making evening class.
I did an intro class to sewing last year it was great.
Anyway I'm all subscribed now and waiting for the prog. If it's half as good as GBBO I'll be quite happy.
Despite the retro patterns the RD Guide hasn't dated and really does cover the works
What channel was that on Foxy?
Initial impressions is that you'd feel like a kid in a sweet shop with all of those materials on hand. My second thought is that I'm disappointed it's just clothes.
Project Runway (Catwalk as it was in the UK) was on Sky 1, I guess most of the people were fledgling designers as opposed to home sewers but there was one on the UK version and I think she won. It's still on in the US but sadly not shown here anymore, I really liked it.
They made their own patterns and had budgets
I'd love to do an evening class but they are very hard to get onto round here
P.s they place they are sewing in is in Balls Pond Road, Hackney
