Fear the Walking Dead: It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel dumb.

Original corpse botherers Team Fucknut return with The Walking Dead in October, but until then there's a new spin off series out, Fear the Walking Dead, set in LA at the very start of the Zombie Apocalypse. As the zombies, sorry, walkers, start to take over, an intrepid band of ethnically diverse two dimensional characters set about doing some really dumb things, for some reason.

Some nice shots of L.A and a believable sense of events escalating but it's not exactly necessary.

That made me cross last night as well. I suppose it will be available through other avenues soon enough.

I'm sure it will be a bit B-list but I am sucker for the zombie apocalypse so I'll watch any old crap where that's concerned.

tasselhoff - 01 Sep 2015 17:41:38 (#4 of 633)

I gave up on the Walking Dead after, err, series three I think.

popstar7 - 01 Sep 2015 17:45:55 (#5 of 633)

I used to be a sucker for anything zombie-related but Walking Dead cured me of that.

BasilSeal - 01 Sep 2015 18:33:06 (#6 of 633)

but it's not exactly necessary

well yeah, i suppose there's some mileage in the 'how it all started narrative'. surely there's a limit to how far they can go with it though? given that we already know how this plays out. The world goes to shit and nearly everyone dies, all in a relatively short time frame. so what then? the remaining survivors duke it out with various reanimated corpses, failed middle management types turned mass murderers and overly verbose cannibals? They can only spin the fall of civilization out for so long, then they're stuck with a bunch of survivors who will essentially be the team fucknut second eleven.

popstar7 - 01 Sep 2015 18:35:08 (#7 of 633)

Maybe they'll be more annoying than Rick Egg from This Life and friends. The dad in the trailer certainly shows potential.

Kim 'what the' Dickens, who plays the mum, is reliably good.

Dementor - 01 Sep 2015 18:45:38 (#9 of 633)

Z Nation isn't too bad - speaking as a non-fan of the genre.

peacalmer - 02 Sep 2015 21:49:33 (#10 of 633)

Is there anywhere on Channel Crime that you can watch Z Nation on?

BasilSeal - 02 Sep 2015 22:49:08 (#11 of 633)

Takes an hour to get going.

And the first episode is a free teaser on Murdoch-o-Vision to get you to sign up for extra stuff if you want to see more.

BasilSeal - 02 Sep 2015 23:40:10 (#13 of 633)

Yeah, i'm about 40 minutes in so far and they're teasing us with the lack of zombies. Old guy in the hospital room's gonna die and turn, oh, no he isn't. earnest black teacher's carked it and is about to go rogue in the school and bring new meaning to the term school dinners, oh, perhaps not.

Fat kid has read on the internets the zombies are coming and junkie kid has seen some early doors undead in the church (where else?), but they're yet to come out into the real world and start eating people's faces. No doubt they will before the end credits role though.

Indeed. She's been good in a few other programs as I remember.

How did he die? I missed that bit.

BasilSeal - 06 Sep 2015 14:03:17 (#15 of 633)

They feigned it in the first episode, when he didn't respond to Hot Mum speaking to him and we expected him to have turned zombie and run amok, but it turned out to be because he was listening to the audio links from the different classrooms to do teacher evaluations. Spoilers to follow if you ain't seen the second one yet.........

Later on, we see him patrolling the corridors still alive, he turns up not so alive when HM and fat kid are back in the school on their respective scavenging missions, she after drugs, fat kid after food. We never actually see how he got killed.

As i recall, the initial idea from Frank Darabont in the fist series of TWD was to elaborate on the origin of the outbreak via the backstory of various walkers Egg from This Life encounters, the guy in the tank was a well known actor in an uncredited appearance because they intended to do his back story as to how he ended up dead in the tank, but AMC pulled the plug on some of the funding. Ironic given that TWD is now their biggest show by a country mile.

Now they're actually going back to elaborate on the start of the zombie apocalypse after all, one would wonder what will differentiate this show from TWD. Sooner or later they'll to the point that Egg was at when TWD began. I mean this can't be about the beginning of the outbreak forever, can it? so then it's just a different set of two dimensional characters in filthy clothing fighting the undead and various psychos they meet on the way.

I did wonder if they'd go on a less bleak trajectory with his show. TWD is moving to the conclusion that everyone who's survived this far is either mad or bad and the only way to stay alive is to be as mad and bad as they are.Perhaps they will differentiate this show by having the characters be a little less dumb, and have a sense that there might be some hope for the future of humanity.

that said, so far it's not looking promising on that front, we've already had character blithely walking towards their doom whilst refusing to listen to people trying to help them because they were annoyed with said people.

In this case our heroes do have the advantage of a heads up on the nature of the threat here, unlike most zombie films they've discovered early on that if you die you return as a walker, and you die if a walker bites you, which is a handy thing to know. Normally your junkie son killing his dealer would be considered A Bad Thing, but here it turned out to be a lucky break.

One wonders how long it will take Hot Mum and Irritating Dad to remember they both work(ed) in a secure building, with a perimeter fence and lockable doors which is currently empty of people but full of food, medical supplies and loads of other useful stuff, and that barricading themselves in the school, along with Fat Kid and a few random red shirts, might be a better bet than going to live under an old tarpaulin in the desert .

This bothers me about much of TWD.

Maybe I'm just more comfortable as a city dweller, with walls, but running to the country and living in tents seems the daftest of tactics.

Rendered - 07 Sep 2015 14:41:34 (#17 of 633)

Was there no third episode last night?

BasilSeal - 07 Sep 2015 19:13:02 (#18 of 633)

google informs me they've postponed till next week because of the 'holiday weekend'

It's what team fucknut have done, and look how it's worked out for them. In fact the people who've got on better in TWD have been the people who've stayed put and barricaded themselves inside their homes or neighborhoods. Things only go to shit once they've become acquainted with Egg and co.

TinyMcOtter - 08 Sep 2015 00:02:47 (#20 of 633)

For the next spinoff, it might be interesting to have a group who have remained in the city and done this. Document how they survived barricaded in, dealing with passing threats, going out for food etc.
