Gardeners' World programme - Yawn, yawn.

I've got really bored with this and it's since Monty Don took over. The best thing about the programme is the gorgeous dogs. I always record it and then skip through most of Monty's features.

Beechgrove Garden is much better and all the presenters are professionally qualified. It is much more professional in its approach and has a much broader range of topics. The garden is specific to the show and not a personal garden.

There's nothing wrong with a gifted amateur generally speaking but a lot of Monty's features are too personal to his own garden.

I'm prepared for a backlash on this from Monty fans so I'll get behind the sofa now! What do other gardeners think?

Monty is aces. Alys is amazing. That Toby bloke is a penis. Joe Swift is good.

Joe's mum is Hyacinth Bucket.

I like GW, prefer Beechgrove. Try never to miss either one.

Monty Don has said that gardening is only worth bothering with if you have a minimum of three acres. He has also said that a gardener cannot feel the true passion unless they OWN the land.

Joe Swift is a rum jockey. His dad is proper, old-school Liverpudlian actor Clive Swift, his aunt is author A. S. Byatt, yet he speaks like some kind of backward, rustic clumperton.

Monty met a married lady and stole her away, it's quite the scandal.

Monty Don has said....

Oh goody. He's said even more stuff to make me detest him. The fuck-awful parasitic gigolo.

TommyDGNR8 - 01 Aug 2016 22:27:31 (#7 of 168)

I like Monty a lot, though I was annoyed that Toby was treated so badly when Monty came back.

Beechgrove is a much more relevant programme to those of us in the North of England; Monty's "jobs for the weekend" are always a good couple of weeks ahead of most of the country.

Nigel and Nelly aside, though, Carol Klein is the best thing about GW.

That's unlike you, being irrationally angry about someone you're never going to meet.

carterbrandon - 01 Aug 2016 22:34:50 (#9 of 168)

A friend of mine met him. What he said to him, is why I, quite rationally, don't like him.

solomongursky - 01 Aug 2016 22:35:58 (#10 of 168)

Spit it out man.

HouseOfLametta - 01 Aug 2016 22:36:44 (#11 of 168)

"What are you doing in my garden?"

Spontu - 01 Aug 2016 23:03:47 (#12 of 168)

Far from it! According to the missus Monty had trespassers in his garden. Far from confronting them he hid in his shed until they left.

I like Monty but he's talking bullshit if he said that .

He was an upmarket jeweller, I think after The Scandal he started gardening.

Longmeadow is 2 acres, so...

I go through phases of watching GW, and I find Monty has a relaxed patrician charm as a presenter, but some of his advice does seem to assume a much bigger garden than most have. I'm not in a watching phase at the moment.

I couldn't get on with Beechgrove at all, but then I'm a southerner.

Anchorman - 01 Aug 2016 23:25:05 (#18 of 168)

I haven't watched gardening programmes for several years( I do so much gardening it's too much like a busman's holiday) but i happened to catch the last two weeks of Monty's programme and found it very gentle to watch. Can't say i learned anything though.
