1983’s highlights include another Bowie re-invention, Irene Cara’s leotard, Kajagoogoo taking the mullet to new heights and the release of moderately successful album, Thriller.

Too Shy is a great record. There, I've said it.

I thought 1983 was Colonel Abrahams, Elton John, Midge Ure and Maria Vidal, but it seems that I shall have to wait until September 1985 for that lot.

Colonel Abrahams

Any relation of Father Abraham, the Smurf bloke?

Two pie pies.

Ah, this is the year of the coming of Madonna and Michael Jackson Thriller. A big year in pop music. The 80s break confidently out of the 70s and find their stride.

HappyNewLawls - 04 Jan 2017 12:08:33 (#13 of 1248)

Yup. Fantastic year for music. Ditto 84. Very much so yes.

Arjuna - 04 Jan 2017 12:20:50 (#14 of 1248)

Colonel Abrams

Catspyjamas16 - 04 Jan 2017 12:21:17 (#15 of 1248)

The year I started (to my shame, but then everyone does at some point) to get snobby and dismissive of "pop".

Michael Jackson, Wham, Culture Club, Paul Young and UB40 were everywhere. Spandau turned into my mum's favourite band, Duran's follow-up to Rio was patchy at best.

It was also the year that what used to be called "heavy metal" split into "hard rock" and the beginnings of what is recognised as metal these days.

Awesome albums from Maiden, Kiss, Dio, Leppard, Ozzy and Gary Moore; we started to hear stuff from the States by oddballs called Motley Crue and Ratt and no-one could figure out whether Kill 'Em All was a joke or what?

Catspyjamas16 - 04 Jan 2017 12:43:38 (#18 of 1248)

It was the year I properly started to pay attention to music, being 7 or 8 years old. I was scared of the Thriller video.

solomongursky - 04 Jan 2017 12:46:21 (#19 of 1248)

The Thriller dance routine was copied by Landis for the Twist and Shout segment of Ferris Burller's Day Off.

solomongursky - 04 Jan 2017 12:46:48 (#20 of 1248)

Burller? Burller?
