Personalised radio ads - they're here

If you're listening via an app and have given your sign up info over to them.

Was listening to the radio the other morning and an advert for a certain internet payment company run by the future modern-day Howard Hughes came on, addressing me by my first name. Apart from the impertinence of this early overfamiliarity, I was intrigued - and it seems they are personalised where they can be.

Thin end of the wedge or harmless curiosity?

Wait until everyone is wearing Google glass or similar. The whole world will be a personalised advert.

mememe - 03 Jan 2019 09:51:19 (#2 of 29)

That's awesome! But also quite open to gaming.

"Hello dickwad".

Such advertising doesn't appear to be getting any 'smarter' in terms of clever, creative ideas etc.

"Hello Dickwad, we see you've just bought a fridge online. Would you like to buy this fridge as well? No? How about this one? Or maybe this one? Go on; sure buy a fridge, why don't you..."

The clients aren't getting any smarter so why would the agencies? It will take a while before the hollowness of the promises of 'targeted' advertising filters through.

I get 'Dear [display name]' emails from a local business at the moment. It's that level of anonymity that we all crave these days.

mememe - 03 Jan 2019 12:00:19 (#7 of 29)

I like that thing you get that says that if you don't agree to their cookies they won't be able to serve you targeted ads. I'm not sure that comes from a terribly self-aware place to be honest.

levelgaze - 03 Jan 2019 12:08:15 (#8 of 29)

I'm fascinated by my 'targeted' ads. I feel woefully misunderstood.

Catspyjamas17 - 03 Jan 2019 12:18:35 (#9 of 29)

I only listen to BBC Sounds and DAB radio in the car so have not come across these.

I guess if the girl from the Trivago ads was suddenly chatting to me by name about booking hotel rooms, I might take more notice.

mememe - 04 Jan 2019 12:20:19 (#11 of 29)

She lives in Berlin, apparently.

xDiggy - 04 Jan 2019 12:24:02 (#12 of 29)

I'm wondering how much it would cost to pay for one targeted at my brother. Imagine the fun you could have.

The one who whispers loudly?

She makes me get all stabby.

It’s the one from holiday secrets or whatever that I can’t stand

widenation - 04 Jan 2019 13:00:05 (#15 of 29)

Yes, most personalised holiday ads would be pretty unwelcome - Kayak for example.

This was the girl I meant through:

This was the girl I meant through:

Ahhh the Aussie lady.

It’s the one from holiday secrets or whatever that I can’t stand

Yes I think I mean her too.

I’m not clicking on that

Agaliarept - 04 Jan 2019 13:09:46 (#18 of 29)

Probably for the best.

bossab2 - 06 Jan 2019 08:57:50 (#19 of 29)

Since I made up my Google ID, I don't know who "Fred" is...

HerrWalrus - 06 Jan 2019 09:17:14 (#20 of 29)

The best thing about these personalised ads is they’ll be aimed at all those people, like Bossab and Mememe, who prefer doing all their stuff online.
