No, I became a lawyer because of This Life.

I was in my first year of law school when Ally McBeal was on TV and we watched it. A friend who’s now a pretty high profile criminal barrister, and married to a circuit judge, used to mimic the wardrobe of Portia de Rossi’s character and once turned up for a 9am lecture wearing a tuxedo suit and slim silk tie, when the rest of us were dressed in hoodies and jeans.

That was goodness knows how many hours I'll never get back. And how do you really say Poughkeepsie?

Ask the dancing baby.

slightly encouraged by an episode about mysogeny

think we are actually better now

not something I say very often

I watched a couple of episodes but didn't get on with it.

This Life + LA Law. I also have a slightly similar hairstyle to Grace Van Owen.

Has she put on any weight yet?

I loved it at the time, but I imagine it would seem really dated now. Mind you, it did get a bit silly with the whole dancing baby thing.

There was that episode of Futurama where the aliens demanded to see the ending of 'Single White Lawyer'.

Single Female Lawyer, working for her client, wearing sexy miniskirts and being self-reliant....

hey, I’m pretty good at this.

There was an Ally McBeal lookalike at the firm I worked for when it was on.

I thought it was Puck-IPP-sy.

Kim Wexler makes me want to become a lawyer. Well, not really but if anyone were going to, it would be her.

The trailers for the show, with their primitive special effects, were a complete turn-off at the time.

any views or reflections?

I only have two memories of the 'locust with collagen implants'.

The one where she is nervous of meeting a female murderer, and does so standing behind a colleague, whimpering and having his shoulder between her teeth. I wouldn't care to meet the person who didn't think that had crossed the 'too cutesy' line.

The one where the story is she gets a boyfriend with a fearsomely large wang. The final sex scene, intercut with her colleagues cheering wildly at a boxer getting an absolute pasting in slo-mo, was without doubt one of the most disturbing and unsettling things I've ever seen in a comedy drama.
