At least they got some notice, and the plug wasn't pulled at 5pm on a Friday afternoon.

Like you did to Guardian Talk.

Tomnoddy - 21 Apr 2021 21:19:25 (#3 of 294)

Now 101.

champagnerocker - 21 Apr 2021 21:22:42 (#4 of 294)

After following the link I can confess that I was recommend #101.

Cavewoman - 21 Apr 2021 21:26:35 (#5 of 294)

#103

Stellata - 21 Apr 2021 21:32:50 (#6 of 294)

When I saw it, I signed in for the first time in months just to recommend.

Ah yes, the subheader...

After 16 years, the ‘knowledge sharing’ site is being closed down – and without much thought about its community

The irony-meter explodes!

AdonisBlue - 21 Apr 2021 23:10:19 (#8 of 294)

Has it ever occured to anyone in here that one reason The Guardian cut Guardian Talk was what an unpleasant place it had become? Full of keyboard warriors personally abusing anyone who posted, including Guardian staff.

Why pay to keep that running?

FGBFGB - 21 Apr 2021 23:12:42 (#9 of 294)

That is not my recollection of GUT, nor was it ever mentioned in the Guardian's supposed explanation for the shutdown.

AdonisBlue - 21 Apr 2021 23:16:34 (#10 of 294)

GUT could be just as unpleasant as in here. Actually even worse. The Guardian are hardly going to say we are shutting you because your a bunch of champagne socialist, public school keyboard warriors who've insulted us and everyone who dares post.

But when the decision was being made to shut the place down it will hardly have helped.

FGBFGB - 21 Apr 2021 23:32:22 (#11 of 294)

"Champagne socialist, public school". You have a really strange outlook on life if you believe that of here. Or there.

KizzyK - 21 Apr 2021 23:43:12 (#12 of 294)

Although to be fair, with their spelling record they might indeed have used 'your a bunch of' to preface it.

U ok, hun?

whitbreadtrophy - 21 Apr 2021 23:56:39 (#14 of 294)

Champagne's over-rated anyway. I'd much rather relax with a cheeky Pomerol

virgil5 - 22 Apr 2021 01:55:44 (#15 of 294)

<drunkenly> GAWD BLESSER GARDJEN sheez onnnly one says deez ting

Garden - 22 Apr 2021 05:36:12 (#16 of 294)

Piss off, Virgil.

Who was AdonisBlue at GUT?

darkhorse - 22 Apr 2021 06:54:56 (#17 of 294)

He was that one who hadn’t been to a public school, obviously.

virgil5 - 22 Apr 2021 06:55:13 (#18 of 294)

Gar. Everyone *nose* who you were.

champagnerocker - 22 Apr 2021 07:31:15 (#19 of 294)

It did always surprise me somewhat that on GUTalk there was a permanent "Zoe Williams is a shit journalist thread" that was allowed to exist.

Especially considering how upset they later got when people dared to question Jessica Valenti's "wrapping paper is an oppressively tool of the patriarchy" opinion columns.

Yahoo has a history of careless disregard for its online communities.
