Benny Hill

TV favourites from days gone by, including The Benny Hill Show and Beadle’s About, are coming to UK screens again this Christmas with the launch of seasonal channel That’s TV Christmas

That’s TV Christmas Head of Programming, Kris Vaiksalu, said: “We are excited to have secured the rights to two of the biggest shows in British TV history, The Benny Hill Show and Beadle’s About, for our seasonal rebrand this year. These shows are part of our national cultural heritage. Watching sexist slapstick shite is a national Christmas tradition but for two decades Feminazis from Brussels have spoiled the fun. Brexit means Brexit. Welcome back Benny"

I seem to recall that although much of Benny Hill's stuff was horrible sexist crap he could be quite clever too.

widenation - 19 Nov 2021 20:33:55 (#2 of 29)

I preferred him to Michael McIntyre.

Snarlygog - 19 Nov 2021 20:41:58 (#3 of 29)

#1 his verbosity in his comic songs was a superb skill.

Biggest parakeets I've ever seen.

"Being nice to Uncle Benny"

More than somewhat #metoo

Good. He's funny. That is all.

Dubris - 19 Nov 2021 22:00:11 (#7 of 29)

Or perhaps he was crass and outdated, Reverend.

Dubris - 19 Nov 2021 22:01:21 (#8 of 29)

Or perhaps both at once.

Oldbathrobe1 - 19 Nov 2021 22:01:57 (#9 of 29)

It was simplistic, broad- brush end of the pier stuff. He was doing music hall with the camera three feet away.

ReverendBlueJeans - 19 Nov 2021 22:02:12 (#10 of 29)

Yes, people who rarely watched him and merely nodded self-righteously at reviews in The Guardian often said that.

Dubris - 19 Nov 2021 22:04:42 (#11 of 29)

An outdated joke can be funny, but that doesn't stop it being outdated at the same time.

Oldbathrobe1 - 19 Nov 2021 22:05:30 (#12 of 29)

I watched him, both at the time and later.

halfnelson - 19 Nov 2021 23:31:41 (#13 of 29)

His early stuff was very clever and inventive, but he recycled it ad nauseum. Added to which, the shows (particularly after 1979) got very grubby and garish. In fairness he did try and tone it down in the last couple of years of his Thames run, but it was too little, too late.

Who can forget Ernie, the fastest milkman in the west?

If you can, let me know how you did it.

It would sometimes be on in our house inbetween Morecambe and wise and Frank Spencer.

All i remember is a little pervy guy chasing girls in bikinis around a <insert furniture item>.

Looks like national treasure Benny is being roped in to the culture wars.

Great thread header, Arjuna.

Benny Hill once accepted an Emmy Award on behalf of Alexei Sayle.

Ta Angelico, but credit is also due to That’s TV Christmas Head of Programming, Kris Vaiksalu.
