Sir Jimmy Savile dies aged 84

  • Kiddly fiddler?
  • Corpse toucher?
  • Other? (please specify)
  • All of the above?

I expect it will be expunged from the record and the BBC will deny that it ever happened.

I suppose it proves the show really is live.

I think her comments just goes to show how 'matter of fact' this sort of thing was treated by institutions.

I think I've mentioned this before but at my Catholic girls boarding school we had a priest who decided to have 'evening prayer' in the chapel with the girls. Every day was a different year group. As it was near bedtime, we were already in our nightwear. That his real motivation was to see underage girls in reduced state of dress wasn't considered by the dorm sisters who marched us down every week.

It was only when the headmistress walked in on one of these prayer groups by accident - she had left a pair of gloves in the chapel (she was also the mother superior) that the whole thing stopped. The priest was gone the next day. And nothing more was said.

There was a TV interview once with a couple of the Hill's Angels that suggest that in Benny's case at least, his sudden and complete fall from grace may have had something to do with his behaviour towards his cast being recognised by TPTB as absolutely out of order.

I suspect the type of 'comedy' he was doing going out of fashion had something to do with it as well

carterbrandon - 23 Oct 2021 11:56:36 (#17046 of 17198)

Stayed in fashion for many years more in the US.

StakludKar - 23 Oct 2021 12:15:39 (#17047 of 17198)

There was "being nice to Uncle Benny" which involved one or other of the Hills Angels giving him a blow job.

Policywatcher - 23 Oct 2021 13:17:04 (#17048 of 17198)

"asked but not forced" was a cop-out given his position of power in the working relationship - some of them also claimed that he got their screentime (and so chance of being able to move to a better job) rigged according to how "nice" they were.

HouseOfLametta - 23 Oct 2021 16:23:04 (#17049 of 17198)

No wonder they ran.

I always assumed Benny Hill was gay. Shows what I know

thePiMan - 24 Oct 2021 09:36:22 (#17051 of 17198)

A bachelor, but not a confirmed one.

Ginmonkey - 24 Oct 2021 10:01:58 (#17052 of 17198)

I always though he was some kind of asexual Peter Pan figure. The representation of women and sex in his shows is so hackneyed, even for those days, it seems like a man trying to ape attraction to women.

solomongursky - 24 Oct 2021 09:03:27 (#17053 of 17198)

Hazel O'Connor says he tried to assault her.

Elsie69 - 24 Oct 2021 10:09:34 (#17054 of 17198)

Interesting viewpoint gin. I just found him revoltingly sexist and the kind of person I would do pretty much anything to avoid.

RosyLovelady - 24 Oct 2021 10:12:56 (#17055 of 17198)

My grandmother's generation liked him because for them he was the sort of cheeky boy they'd sometimes seen in old time variety shows.

I think a lot of showbiz legends who predeceased Savile could reasonably be described as Yewtree Dodgers.

Ginmonkey - 24 Oct 2021 10:21:21 (#17057 of 17198)

#17054 I am too young to have really seen any Benny Hill when he was popular. The clips I have seen he came across as a strange person, someone with arrested sexual development trying and failing to prove to some imaginary "real men" he is attracted to women. It all seemed so strange and false.

BasilSeal - 24 Oct 2021 10:23:33 (#17058 of 17198)

Just to demonstrate that google are watching our every move, this video appeared as a suggestion in the side bar last time i looked at you tube, Benny Hill, Awful moments in TV. the title is not wrong:

Hard to believe this was prime time TV, it's 50% rather shoddy physical comedy, mostly Benny in a funny outfit getting things wrong and falling over, and 50% "Look at the creepy man about to sexually assault the much younger woman. Isn't that hilarious?" (the sketches around 3.00mins in)

The comments below though...

I always though he was some kind of asexual Peter Pan figure.

I think this persona was successfully used by a number of entertainers to mask something else.

I worked , many years ago, with an interior designer who had worked on BHs home in London

She said he was a deeply horrible man.
