I intend booking a Costa Brava rental apartment in order to visit our niece and her new arrival at her home in Barcelona in September. I found an ideal flat on TripAdvisor but it specified check-in between 4pm until 8pm which our flight arrival time precluded. I emailed the owner to request a later arrival arrangement via TripAdvisor's email service and this has been ignored for almost a week. I re-checked the T/A site to find the availability calendar hadn't been updated since April '19. Question is, if I'd submitted a booking request with my c/card details etc what would the outcome have been? Would I have lost my money or would it just have been "Up in the air?".

Do T/A wait until the owner has accepted and confirmed or is the money immediately available to the owner?

The former.

I know TripAdvisor is for holidays and stuff but there's a lot of "off-topic" stuff. You could probably post other problems on it.

But mainly it's full of hotel owners quibbling about the reviews.

The flat might be available through another booking service if you google the address. Try booking.com for example.

Nah! I reckon the owner's brown bread or ill. If she's ignoring T/A why would she consult elsewhere? Fuck 'er - I'll take my custom elsewhere!

The Tripadvisor rentals are often ones that are listed on multiple sites (there are platforms that handle this). And they're often ones that quietly insist on minimum one week, Saturday-to-Saturday rentals. Unless they're instant book, you have to take their availability with a pinch of salt...

Vacant (out-of-term) halls of residence with en-suites are often available to rent through booking.com etc. Check you don't need to be a visiting professor or anything though.

There's also hometogo.co.uk which is a metasearch for holiday lets.

Niece has phoned mi señora, says her in-laws own a flat in Malgrat which is booked for our weeks, but she is pally with other owners who will almost certainly find us something, Wa-hey - and cheaper than T/A!
