Whats all the fuss about The Ed Sheerans?

I'll be honest being an old curmudgeonly metaller, I've only just recently head this Ed Sheeran chap.

I have to say I was expecting a lot more.

It's just an updated version of the boyband crap from the 90s surely?

For those thinking “Sure, but not everybody’s lost the plot”, consider this: Sheeran is also sitting at the top of the charts in Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Sweden. He’s probably number one on Venus too.

I mean, since when has popularity been a marker of good art?

It's pap right?

widenation - 13 Mar 2017 14:25:12 (#2 of 463)

It might even be worse than the boy band crap from the 90s. I haven't managed to listen to more than a few seconds of any of his output.

Agaliarept - 13 Mar 2017 14:25:59 (#3 of 463)

Possibly, it's frikken whiney, I know that.

At least Relight My Fire had a beat!

phantlers - 13 Mar 2017 14:31:35 (#4 of 463)

I liked his stuff more when he was in Two Door Cinema Club, as often opined to wind up his fans in our family.

frantastic - 13 Mar 2017 14:32:42 (#5 of 463)

I don't get it either going on the little I've heard but he writes his own stuff plays the geetar and is not classically good looking. This makes him A SERIOUS ARTIST.

TinyMcOtter - 13 Mar 2017 14:36:01 (#6 of 463)

He seems to have arrived out of nowhere to be the biggest act of all time ever.

But yeah, I'd never heard of him until recently.

Anthony16 - 13 Mar 2017 14:37:02 (#7 of 463)

Fact is there's no real competition around at present.

TinyMcOtter - 13 Mar 2017 14:37:43 (#8 of 463)

And it seems he's the guardian's latest obsession/clickbait fodder, so...

popstar7 - 13 Mar 2017 14:37:58 (#9 of 463)

He's a little shit.

KizzyK - 13 Mar 2017 14:42:42 (#10 of 463)

He seems to have arrived out of nowhere

Yeah, HERE. I know his parents and a number of his friends, he is just basically a good normal unstarry lad & I think this is much of the explanation. He still comes back and hangs out with all his old secondary school mates here, goes to the pub, the co-op etc and people generally leave him alone because he is a local.

He really isn't a little shit Popstar.

TheExcession - 13 Mar 2017 14:45:04 (#11 of 463)

His music is unoffensive but utterly unremarkable. His high levels of popularity are a complete mystery to me, the fucking ginger goblin.

Agaliarept - 13 Mar 2017 14:45:21 (#12 of 463)

Yeah, HERE. I know his parents and a number of his friends

While that's nice to hear that doesn't really explain the global hysteria at his particular brand of BeigePop.

KizzyK - 13 Mar 2017 14:48:48 (#13 of 463)

I think its because it is so simple, he makes it look like anyone with a bit of talent can make it, its just him and a guitar when it comes down to it. Any kid in their bedroom can do that. Its not so over produced and computer created that you can't get close to playing it yourself. A fuck of a lot of popular music these days doesn't work with live musicians/singers at all.

I can't say I particularly like any of his songs but there is at least a story behind a lot of them, they have some element of ballad if you like whereas a lot of the stuff its up against has just one or two repeptetive phrases over and over. Might be that too.

Tripos - 13 Mar 2017 14:51:29 (#14 of 463)

#1 Sheeran is also sitting at the top of the charts in Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Sweden. He’s probably number one on Venus too.

Well I know Germany has always had a fondness for 'pop' music. I don't know about the other territories.

popstar7 - 13 Mar 2017 14:52:16 (#15 of 463)

This is the second most streamed song off his new album and it is atrocious -

Agaliarept - 13 Mar 2017 14:53:36 (#16 of 463)

Thanks for the info KizzyK.

So when is the next fanclub meeting?

Joke, joke :)

KizzyK - 13 Mar 2017 14:54:00 (#17 of 463)

Heh Popstar. Can you not appreciate the joy of a musician just fucking off the producers who tell you absolutely no way should the song go on your album, including it anyway and then it being an absolute hit in Ireland? I think thats quite funny tbh.

popstar7 - 13 Mar 2017 14:55:17 (#18 of 463)

I'm 100% with the record company on that one.

Agaliarept - 13 Mar 2017 14:55:50 (#19 of 463)

no way should the song go on your album, including it anyway and then it being an absolute hit in Ireland?

That story was what made me want to hear what the fuss was about. I admired that.

A Shame the songs I have heard aren't as strong as that tale.

LomaxFairchild - 13 Mar 2017 14:57:08 (#20 of 463)

He lives next door to my god-mother and gave her a hug when she was in a bad way recently, so that makes him a good egg in my book.
