Novelty songs you're irrationally fond of

Windmill In Old Amsterdam - we sang it at primary school, when it was cutting edge pop music. Actually quite a lovely chord progression.

Whistle Stop - Roger Miller

I think I'm Too Sexy is the only acceptable answer here.

How the fuck do you write that without it sounding like Eats Shoots and Leaves?

Ebadlun - 17 Aug 2017 02:24:12 (#5 of 261)

Whilst I agree it is the summation of all human achievement, I quite like that rooster song MaryMC posted. The weird pauses and incessant repetition take it into a different realm. A sinister one, haunted by the tortured ghosts of Brian Cant and Derek Griffiths.

YouTube says it's not available to me. Not sure what I'm doing wrong or if I provoked this falling out, somehow. Hmm.

Ebadlun - 17 Aug 2017 02:29:21 (#7 of 261)

I see there is still 4 and a half hours to go, but I will bear with it, on the off-chance it changes key somewhere around the 2 hour mark.

donkra - 17 Aug 2017 02:30:39 (#8 of 261)

Heh, I found another link to 3 minutes' worth and lost the will to live at 1 minute 20. Exactly.

MaryMC - 17 Aug 2017 02:31:49 (#9 of 261)

This is Roger Miller's original version:

and it was used more recently here:

I'm just continually finding new depths to the animation, the chord structure.

You don't really get the major 7th voicing in bar 3 till the 113th time.

Antimatter - 17 Aug 2017 02:41:38 (#11 of 261)

I love Dead Skunk by Loudon Wainwright.

I like the way a passing expensive string orchestra joins in the impromptu folk club jam.

This is all reminding me of driving to work on Christmas Day, accompanied by the Radio 2 show where they play all this crap beautiful music.

FleurDuMal - 17 Aug 2017 07:14:35 (#13 of 261)

Not sure it's 'novelty' as such, but I love Johnny Cash's One Piece At A Time

cozzer - 17 Aug 2017 07:17:23 (#14 of 261)

John Kettley is a Weatherman - a Tribe of Toffs

19 not out - the Commentators

fenderstrat - 17 Aug 2017 07:24:58 (#15 of 261)

Shudduppayaface, or whatever it's called.

Tadagee - 17 Aug 2017 07:49:07 (#16 of 261)

Not only is Barbie Girl rather catchy, it also is actually about something (the objectification of women to meet unrealistic standards).

Dementor - 17 Aug 2017 08:12:55 (#17 of 261)

Lemon Jelly - Nice weather for Ducks

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8yx4k4tzqE

RosyLovelady - 17 Aug 2017 08:22:34 (#18 of 261)

Shaggy & Rikrok: It Wasn't Me

fenderstrat - 17 Aug 2017 08:29:09 (#19 of 261)

How is that a novelty song? It wasn't me.

bossab2 - 17 Aug 2017 08:32:18 (#20 of 261)

2 pints of lager and a packet of crisps.
