So, having had 23 years to think about it, do you prefer 'Country House' or 'Roll With It'?

Discounting the unlikely eventuality you've had anything better to think about.

My view remains the same as that of the sixteen year old me - they are both pretty terrible. Roll With It is dull dull dad rock and Country House is tedious art school smuggery.

The weakest single from either band.

Menswear hey.

Remember them?

Arjuna - 29 Jun 2018 06:10:54 (#5 of 523)

I preferred Country House but cannot even remember who won.

Faraway - 29 Jun 2018 06:26:29 (#6 of 523)

Yeah, Country House. But Pulp were better than either of them.

HouseOfLametta - 29 Jun 2018 06:27:17 (#7 of 523)

Disco 2000.

Obv.

TenGorillas - 29 Jun 2018 06:34:27 (#8 of 523)

Roll with it > Country House > Disco 2000.

I had some Oasis soup at a cafe the other day.

It's like normal soup, but you get a roll with it.

I thought they were both weak singles from two bands I liked at the time.

I like that in Stringfellow's letter that he says two other bands "managed to get through the night" at his club as if it's an ordeal, although he then spoils it by saying they "had a fantastic time".

HouseOfLametta - 29 Jun 2018 07:09:51 (#11 of 523)

I have to say, in my considered opinion, Oasis are one of the least talented, most derivative, least engaging showers of phone-it-in chancers that ever stole a teenager's pocket money with a potboiler dirge, but Country House is just horrible.

lapsedcat - 29 Jun 2018 07:11:59 (#12 of 523)

Oasis were awful

I quite liked “Roll With It”, although not enough to own it.

And also despite the first few times I heard it on Virgin FM (remember that?) whilst playing cards and smoking spliffs around a friend’s flat (remember that?), I thought it was the new single by Del Amitri.

I thought Country House was like a nursery rhyme. Row Row Row Your Boat, or something.

I quite liked both bands at the time but neither of those singles were very good as others have said. Pulp were indeed, much better than either though, Blur did improve whereas Oasis' one trick soon became tedious.

HouseOfLametta - 29 Jun 2018 07:14:49 (#15 of 523)

Row row row your Prozac

Gently down the Balzac.

darkhorse - 29 Jun 2018 07:15:29 (#16 of 523)

I like the wistfulness of the bit that goes:

I think I've got a feeling I've lost inside I think I'm gonna take me away and hide

Can probably dispense with the rest of the song, which is just the build up to that bit, I reckon.

HouseOfLametta - 29 Jun 2018 07:15:40 (#17 of 523)

It really is such pretentious drivel. At least the equally content-free Parklife had a jaunty feel.

xbod72 - 29 Jun 2018 07:27:04 (#18 of 523)

DH's lyric was from Oasis.

HouseOfLametta - 29 Jun 2018 07:28:05 (#19 of 523)

Er, yes?

darkhorse - 29 Jun 2018 07:28:14 (#20 of 523)

I think that was a cross post, I think Lammers was responding to #15.
