Lovely track. Long time since I heard that album. As for that song, more tedious nightmare than dream, but a point of redemption there at the end.

To my mind, a stunning combination of images with one of her best tracks off the "Hissing of Summer Lawns" album.

A recent YouTube discovery, which I thought deserved sharing with a wider audience.

I agree, the images are indeed, stunning, and very apposite.

I for one am pleased you shared.

It's a very recent upload. I wonder if she's seen it herself?

As for images (of her), here's one I've only just found - https://designkultur.files.wordpress.com/2015/01/1

I still insist on referring to the MetLife building as the PanAm because of that song. It was what got me into Joni when I heard it in a music instrument shop and had to go over and ask what it was.

Joni and the American Dream

Is this dream - or nightmare?

And is this dream even American, given that she's ackshelly Canadian ?

CaptainBlack - 14 May 2019 16:01:44 (#8 of 18)

Given she’s singing about Manhattan, it’s a reasonable guess.

quartus - 14 May 2019 20:13:33 (#9 of 18)

So that got me to thinking - sure the song's about the American Dream, but what if there's a Canadian Dream. Is there one?

And the question led to a couple of interesting finds. One from the Sam Roberts Band - a song that is definitely growing on me https://youtu.be/n1YxpupyuXw

and another from an advertiser, which definitely gives the impression that the Canadian Dream differs a lot from the US one: https://youtu.be/BjNL4aFQZ60

Harry's House is basically the first couple of series of Mad Men in a song.

Prince said back in the 80s that Hissing of Summer Lawns, which is how I first came to listen to Joni.

Antimatter - 14 May 2019 22:48:17 (#13 of 18)

How did Prince know that?

RosyLovelady - 08 Dec 2021 12:27:51 (#17 of 18)

I thought the story went that there's no need for a Canadian Dream because they're already living it there.

Tylenol - 08 Dec 2021 13:02:12 (#18 of 18)

Looks like she's got argyria.
