I like the raps.

Moschops - 21 May 2020 11:22:17 (#2 of 110)

Some of it's great. I'm not massively into the boasting and misogyny though.

ReverendBlueJeans - 21 May 2020 11:23:15 (#3 of 110)

Discussion on wrapping, hipping-hopping and griminess was rather taking over the sleb thread, so I thought a forum was required.

<checks calendar to make sure it’s not still 1989>

ReverendBlueJeans - 21 May 2020 11:25:04 (#5 of 110)

Don't be silly. It's still 1976. In this house, anyway.

Arjuna - 21 May 2020 11:27:42 (#6 of 110)

They think that it's a snap, a snap to make a rap.

Yes that was my fault, would you like me to post my thread derailer from over there, over here?

To get the ball rolling as it were?

Word.

JohnIlly - 21 May 2020 11:30:22 (#9 of 110)

It's crap. It isn't music.

Arjuna - 21 May 2020 11:30:40 (#10 of 110)

to rock a rhyme, to rock a rhyme that's right on time it's Tricky Tricky Tricky

Arjuna - 21 May 2020 11:31:29 (#11 of 110)

I only like the old stuff, its all just a noise these days

Agaliarept - 21 May 2020 11:33:42 (#12 of 110)

What year does that take you up to?

From t'other thread:

For me rap is good or bad based on a few things.

Delivery - How does the rapper use the beat and where on the beat are the words placed?

Content - Is the rapper talking about something they know? Are they well versed on their chosen subject?

Image - Is the rapper projecting an image that is 'real'? Are they being true to themselves?

I love it when rap is discussed here. At the more conscious end it's poetry with an important historical significance. Sure, the pop charts dilute the fuck out of it and for some reason corporate America only seems to promote rap that shows black people as violent, sex obsessed bogey men (I wonder why) but there is some great stuff out there if you look for it.

I suppose it's fair to admit that often even 'good' rappers are guilty of shit songs but outside of rap there's only a few artists who hit the mark every time anyway.

Check out Aceyalone, The Freestyle Fellowship, MF Doom, Talib Kweli, The Arsonists or CloudDead as examples of people doing rap right. I've lost hold of the modern game but personally I think Tyler the Creator is doing some amazing stuff and just focusing on delivery Lil' Dicky is doing some great stuff and if you can stomach the content, MGK is worth mentioning.

late 80s

FrankieTeardrop - 21 May 2020 11:36:54 (#15 of 110)

Rap is like opera, an incredibly skilled vocal art form that I only rarely choose to listen to.

Gotcha.

Arjuna - 21 May 2020 11:40:21 (#17 of 110)

I mainly liked it in small doses, rarely listened to whole albums, saw RUN DMC once they did a brilliant show that only lasted about 25 mins. Quite a few complaining but I thought it was ace.

Yes, go ahead, old boy.

Oh, you have.

Agaliarept - 21 May 2020 11:58:00 (#19 of 110)

Heh.

Macpaddy - 21 May 2020 13:50:19 (#20 of 110)

Is 'Ganstas Paradise' rap? If so that's the only one worth listening to.
