WTF Lyrics

Lyrics that leap out, for any reason.

The snot has caked against my pants - Love

What's it all about, Alfie (plus the rest of the most existential film tune ever written)

Stayed in bed all morning just to pass the time - Carole King

Romeo and Juliet / They never felt this way, I bet / So don't underestimate my point of view

Takes some balls to invoke Shakespeare, rhyme Juliet with I bet and follow up with the most prosaic, therapy-speak line in the history of pop.

Still like the song, though.

He starts to shake and cough

Just like the old man in

That book by Nabakov

So much wrong here. Never mind the clunky shoe-horning of a literary reference and the not-quite-rhyming, the 'old man' Humbert Humbert was in his 30s in the novel and not prone to shaking or coughing. He had his faults, mind.

I remember as a kid thinking whoever wrote Help must be hurting, but it was a great tune so I jumped around to it anyway.

Shake it like a bowl of soup, yeah! You let it go loop the loop yeah!

Sorry Otis, but I can't hear this song without picturing Julie Walters as an elderly waitress.

'Dance all over your face' by Kiss (Gene Simmons). No, just no.

'You came up from behind me and I knew that our eyes were gonna meet'

How did you know he was there? Do you carry a mirror in front of you? And did he overtake you, then pivot round for the eyes meeting part?

I saw you standing down by the stage

Your Black stockings and your see through dress

Your mouth is open but I don't want to hear ya

Say good night

You're sorta young

But you're over age

I don't care cause I like your style

Don't know about your brain

But you look alright

I want to touch you

I want to feel you

I want to make you mine

Holy Diver

You've been down too long in the midnight sea

Oh, what's becoming of me?

Ride the tiger

You can see his stripes but you know he's clean

Oh, don't you see what I mean?

Ricolas - 11 Oct 2020 10:00:15 (#9 of 110)

No, Ronnie mate. I don't see what you mean.

Don't know about your brain

Always loved the implications of that line!

This is a bit too easy, but.

Sing, bird of prey

Beauty begins at the foot of you

Do you believe the manner?

Gold stainless nail

Torn through the distance of man

As they regard the summit

Even Siberia goes through the motions

Hold out and hold up

Hold down the window

(Outbound, river)

Hold out the mornin' that comes into view

(Blue tail, tail fly)

River runnin' right on over my head

How does she sing?

Who holds the ring?

And ring and you will find me coming

Cold reigning king

Hold all the secrets from you

As they produce the movement

Even Siberia goes through the motions

Hold out and hold up

Hold down the window

(Outbound, river)

Hold out the mornin' that comes into view

(Blue tail, tail fly)

River runnin' right on over the outboard

River, blue tail, tail fly, Luther, in time

Hold down the window…

A lyrical exchange from Massive Attack’s song on their debut album, Blue Lines, “Five Man Army” has puzzled me for many years.

Daddy G: Mashing up the country and also abroad/Plan to go to America when I get a visa card

3-D: But gettin' a visa card nowadays isn't hard.

Now does Daddy G mean he plans to go to America when he gets a visa (to enter the US) or a Visa credit card (to borrow money to go there)? Has he accidentally called a visa, a “Visa card”? Easy mistake perhaps, they were young guys at the time.

So has 3-D assumed Daddy G means a visa credit card, and thus commented on the ease of obtaining consumer credit with lending loosened up in the early 90s? Or is he talking about the application process for US visas for UK visitors, and politely not corrected Daddy G’s mistake in saying, “visa card”?

Sitting on a park bench

Eyeing litle girls with bad intent

Snots running down his nose

Greasy fingers smearing shabby clothes

which is either Jethro Tull's Aqualung or reportage on what Call-me-dave is doing now.

I always assumed the visa card thing was intentionally ambiguous.

Here come's my next-door neighbour

Comin' down the road

He always looks so regal

Riding on his toad named Lightning

The toad's name is Lightning

He's ten hand at his shoulder

And if you give him sugar

He'll whinny like a boulder

The handshake seals the contract

From the contract

There's no turning back

The turning point of a career

In Korea, being insincere

The holiday was fun packed

The contract still intact

'Dance all over your face' by Kiss

Really? Twenty albums worth of contenders and that's the one you go for?

I don't usually say things like this to girls your age

But when I saw you coming out of the school that day

I knew, I knew, I've got to have you
