The bit of Coleridge in the middle of Maiden's Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

Clue - it's not Frost At Midnight.

If Chank’s point is that some embedded media might be be handy for threads like this, he’d be right.

thisonehasalittlehat - 20 May 2021 12:07:11 (#24 of 50)

I think the main point chank is trying to impress is that he's smarter than everyone else, and the main person he is trying to impress this upon is himself. But I might be mistaken, I suppose.

raymie - 20 May 2021 12:08:28 (#25 of 50)

everybody else knows that you know it's you who's smartest

thisonehasalittlehat - 20 May 2021 12:13:59 (#26 of 50)

Well, look, I've no idea. Up here the air is too rarefied to think about such things.

In the old days, if someone said something amusing, they might get classic quoted. Nowadays they're asked if they get punched and are accused of showing off. Weird.

thisonehasalittlehat - 20 May 2021 12:32:42 (#28 of 50)

Very good point.

Eligelis - 20 May 2021 12:40:19 (#29 of 50)

We can alway try to get back to those golden times, I suppose. In that spirit I offer the following up for potential CQing:

“Something amusing”

To be on the safe side I actually said out loud “Something amusing” as well as typed it; in case my initial understanding of DUs comment wasn’t literal enough.

thisonehasalittlehat - 20 May 2021 12:42:42 (#30 of 50)

Are you asking to be punched?

Eligelis - 20 May 2021 12:43:43 (#31 of 50)

Yes.

thisonehasalittlehat - 20 May 2021 12:44:06 (#32 of 50)

Now you're just showing off.

'I think the main point chank is trying to impress is that he's smarter than everyone else'

Again, not really. My point was that its hard to have a discussion about music without (a) some music, or (b) a sufficient shared vocabulary to discuss it in the absence of music. Which in fairness the OP'er themselves recognised in the OP.

Snarlygog - 20 May 2021 14:12:52 (#36 of 50)

You could have said it better instead of coming over like an arrogant Cunt as usual.Do you have a personality condition that we can make allowances for or were you just trying to score points on Gumly ?

thisonehasalittlehat - 20 May 2021 14:42:12 (#37 of 50)

My point was that its hard to have a discussion about music without (a) some music, or (b) a sufficient shared vocabulary to discuss it in the absence of music.

Oh right, because I thought what you said was: I find this style of thread in the music folder quite interesting in a way, its like a group of colour-blind people trying to describe a Jackson Pollock painting.

Which doesn't seem quite the same, unless you think the colour-blind people simply lack exemplars or a vocabulary to carry out that description. I definitely got the impression you were trying to communicate that posters were somehow incapable of describing the objects under discussion, because they were by analogy colour-blind to mustic, not simply ill-prepared to do so. But I recognise now that was definitely my mistake, probably arising from a lack of shared vocabulary between us.

Instrumental break - wordless section between two blocks of the vocals, eg the guitar solo after "wish I'd never been born at all" in Bohemian Rhapsody.

Key change - tonal shift that emphasizes a mood while repeating other aspects of the song eg Michael Jackson's Earth Song to indicate he's REALLY ANGSTY or possibly because Jarvis Cocker is putting him off

Middle eight - a midsection that is vocally and melodically different to the preceding part of the song eg the "oh my lord" section of Boney M's Mary's Boy Child.

Vocal bridge - like the middle eight but talky, eg Boney M's "but with his drinking" exposition in Rasputin.

peacalmer - 20 May 2021 15:52:15 (#39 of 50)

I might've made some or all of that up.

moto748 - 20 May 2021 16:00:15 (#40 of 50)

Possibly. But if so, he's hardly the only one.
