What’s that song that I didn’t have time to Shazam?

It’s from 1971 or earlier.

It’s quite sad sounding and it has some lyrics in it somewhere that go (something like)

…wash your (dirty?) face or hands or ?… something something … try again …

That bit’s going up in pitch.

Not Shake, rattle and roll?

Nope.

I’ve found it. It was When You Are A King by White Plains.

It’s actually “change your dirty vest” & then “when you are king” rather than the lyrics I specified.

HouseOfLametta - 23 Sep 2021 21:01:40 (#5 of 23)

It's a fucking awful dirge.

Congratulations.

I remembered it from when I was little. Meaning it must have been played on the radio well into the 70s because I am not *that* old.

HouseOfLametta - 23 Sep 2021 21:08:21 (#7 of 23)

It's filed with Excerpt from a Teenage Opera and My Lady D'Arbanville as the unacceptable face of the 1960s.

Spotify informs me that The Nolan Sisters did a cover version.

Hmmmm

breakfast - 23 Sep 2021 21:17:30 (#10 of 23)

Released in 2010 so they waited a while.

carterbrandon - 25 Sep 2021 16:05:43 (#11 of 23)

I'd forgotten that completely.

Now I'm thinking....

Boris Johnson.

LomaxFairchild - 25 Sep 2021 16:30:59 (#12 of 23)

I thought the answer to the thread title might be 'You Suffer' by Napalm Death.

breakfast - 25 Sep 2021 16:38:35 (#13 of 23)

It was on a TV programme from 1971 you see but they only played a small number of seconds of it. I knew I knew it from wayback when but that was it.

Turned out the TV episode was on YouTube so I had all the time in the world to Shazam it. (Alternatively I could have listened to the few lyrics they played more closely.)

Of course White Plains magnum opus came a couple of years later. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GuPqHY9eJo

They're Les McQueen's Creme Brulee, aren't they? It's a shit business.

the unacceptable face of the 1960s

White Plains were more 1970s, featuring the guy from the Flower Pot Men.

whitbreadtrophy - 29 Sep 2021 14:45:20 (#18 of 23)

White Plains are one of those bands where however crap they were you're surprised at how much of their output you remember.

I had completely forgotten that song.

What is Shazam?

AdonisBlue - 01 Oct 2021 17:09:08 (#20 of 23)

Da kids use it to ID their musical ditties. It recognises their 'choons' by listening. My phone does it too.
