Christmas songs - the good the bad and the ugly

It's the same rotation every year, give or take the occasional new addition and perhaps minus the occasional one when the recording artist is revealed to have made past transgressions.

Favourites may change from year to year but kindly list your favourites and most loathed and more importantly - why. Rationality optional.

Brenda Lee's RATCT, recorded when she was 13 features a sax solo by the great Boots Randolph* that is irresistibly cheerful, as is the sax part in Wizzard's IWICBCED. Favourite though is the Ronettes' Sleigh Ride. As soon as those sleigh bells start jingling and the horses clip clopping I am transported to the infants school hall and a daughter's first school Christmas pageant.

Of the current crop, Leona's and Michael Buble's are pleasant enough. The John Lennon one with Yoko screeching can do one though.

Now, do tell.

I have to walk out of shops if they start playing Macca's Wonderful Christmas Time, such is my hatred of it

fogger - 10 Dec 2021 18:21:02 (#4 of 134)

Mariah's is the greatest Christmas song ever.

Next tier down: Darlene Love; Jose Feliciano: The Darkness

And shoulders with Chops on Macca.

I'm yet to form an opinion on Krampus by the Lathums. I thought they'd dragged up an obscure Smith's performance first time I heard it.

I like the Waitresses one, and Poly's Black Christmas, once a year is enough though.

Listen to The Waitresses' bass line. Awesome.

Titter not, but there's a version of O Holy Night that's amazing, it's Michael Crawford in Bethlehem:

You need a good range for that song, the second "divine" makes your eyes water.

I love them all phant, I will edit.

I'm listening to "Big Narstie's Narstie Christmas Night Out" mix on BBC Sounds.

Most of it is pretty crap (raps with a bit of jingle bell). But TLC's "Sleigh Ride" is catchy gem.

fogger - 10 Dec 2021 19:19:52 (#17 of 134)

This is the best ever:

Ah, a John Holt reggae cover of "Merry Christmas (War is Over)". Never heard that before. Pleasant enough.
